No New Posts   Walking on steel Roof?

August 23, 2011

I have a job that I looked at and they have a green steel roof over the porch area.  The only way to get to the roof above is to use a ladder off of the metal roof to reach the shingled roof above.  This roof is to steep to walk from the back to get to the top 9/12.  My questions is has anyone ever sucessfully used this aproach?  Are these metals roofs able to with stand the weight of the ladder and myself without leaving impressions from the feet of the ladder?  I am 205lbs.  If they are I thought of getting a piece of wood of some sort so that the weight can be distributed evenly.  I am also concerend with the metal roof getting slippy from watering it down. Bucket rental is out of the question, any thoughts would be great.

No New Posts   Southern Coastal Hurricane Irene looks like a possible Cat 4

August 23, 2011

Batten down the hatches.

MIAMI (AP) — Emergency officials from Florida to the Carolinas were closely watching Irene Tuesday as the first hurricane to seriously threaten the U.S. in three years churned over energizing tropical waters. The storm has already cut a destructive path through the Caribbean.

Forecasters say the hurricane could grow to a monstrous Category 4 storm with winds of more than 131 mph before it's predicted to come ashore this weekend on the U.S. mainland. The U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami expected Irene to reach Category 3 strength on Tuesday, said spokesman Dennis Feltgen.

Officials could begin issuing watches for parts of the U.S. mainland later in the day. Because the storm is so large, Florida could begin feeling some effects from the storm late Wednesday.

Current government models have the storm's outer bands sweeping Florida late this week before it takes aim at the Carolinas this weekend, though forecasters caution that predictions made days in advance can be off by hundreds of miles. Georgia is also likely to be affected.

No New Posts   Who Qualifies their customers?

August 19, 2011

This was said in Tampa or somewhere?

Qualifying a customer??? I dont remember anything after that. The 3 words qualifying a customer. If anywhere I'm thinking AC's class. It sounds like him? I heard that chit somewhere.

Well I used to ask for a 3rd up front, on biger jobs, where more than a leaf blower was needed. Only 'cause I didnt want to come out of pocket. For the job. That was then.

What do those 3 words mean to you? Qualifying a customer.

For me now The 3rd up front qualifies them, that they have money to pay! The balance. LOL!!! Its always less than a 3rd, too. $400 job in gated comunity. My sales rocked, everything in place! I even brushed my teeth that morning! lol!!! She couldnt come of $100 bucks. I shook her hand and wished her luck, lol!!!

Also same day, Called for a roof cleaning.  Black gutters, This whole house need to be done, right! Not just the roof. Went back and forth, This aint pawn stars! Chit! Told her about the deposit, She didnt like that neither! Said I couldnt make her gutter white! This was a WOM. Done 3 other houses on that street! LOL!! WTF!

I tell her I can do what I say. The deposit qualifies her. And I rode out. She called me at estimate bout 5 miles away. Long story short, After leaving the estimate, i sold it, she called again, made a u turn and sold her.

Well this seems to be my meaning for it?

 Qualifying Customers

 What else could it mean?

No New Posts   Possible startup in North Houston

August 16, 2011

Hey everyone,

This is my first posting on the site, but I have been reading it for a couple of days.  Great info on this site!!  A friend and myself were thinking of maybe starting a roof cleaning business for ourselves.  We are both employed, but have pretty open schedules.  So, it would be a part-time gig for the most part.  Obviously, many of you have been quite successful, so I know the business model can work.  I'm just trying to realistically figure out a basic startup cost (which I know can vary greatly), and how easy it is to pick up business.  I've seen several websites for cleaners here in the Houston area that seem professional, and was also thinking about maybe asking about a partnership with one of them.  I know that would cut into the profits, but might work best for all parties involved. Also, we're not the type to have a fly by night operation, we're honest guys who want to give our customers the best experience possible.  That's just who we are as people. Thanks in advance for any comments!

No New Posts   Bad Demo

August 11, 2011

I can't understand why anyone would do a demo on a residential job, especially someone who advertises $279 roof cleaning in a market that supports pricing 2xs that amount.

Here is the result of a competitors demo on a job we ended up doing this week.  Why would they do the top and leave the clean streaks below?  Wouldn't it make sense to do the bottom and leave the top dirty?

The freshly seal coated driveway is stained by a chemical leak from the guys truck.  My guys are forbidden from going on a customers driveway.  The picture where they stained the driveway by the garage with gutter cleaner didn't come out, but it was a mess.

No New Posts   My hilarious conversation with a fly by night roof cleaner.

June 1, 2011

Just the other day I was on my way to clean a home for a client and remove rust off the roof.  Entering the backyard I came across a guy that was in and out of the house and I asked him if he lived there.  He was only there to give some estimates on interior work and that the owner would be back shortly.  I never mentioned my intentions because we started to chat about what he does and out of the conversation he told me he did drywall, paint etc.  He looked at the house and said yea I can power wash and clean roofs.  I was curious and I asked how do you clean roofs??  His reply was well it's very easy all you have to do is fire up the power wash and blast off all the black stains.  He then said, but you have to adjust your pressure because you are going to blow off a couple of shingles on average.  That just goes to show you the shingles are not put down properly he told me.  I had to stop him right there and tell him he was wrong and that he would give professional roof cleaners a bad name.  I also informed him he was damaging the roof and to just call me to clean it correctly because I was there to do the work.  He was shocked and was speechless!  Minutes later I hear him on the phone with the home owner saying hey I can power wash and clean roofs too.  Priceless!!!!!!!!!!   In the end home owner agreed with me and loved my work.

No New Posts   Intuit Go Payment

May 30, 2011

Just got the Intuit Go Payment setup for my iphone.  Anybody have any experience with this.  I haven't had a chance to use it yet but it seems pretty reasonable at 2.7  percent of the transaction cost.

With this I can take a credit card payment at the customers house and email them the receipt.

March 31, 2011

Hi everyone - My name is Jon Huffey and I am pretty new to this forum. I have a company called Washing Under Pressure and I live in Iowa. Today I had the opportunity to spend some time with a veteran of the RCIA forum Bruce Sullivan. I would just like to say that it was a Joy and Honor to spend time with him in person. He invited me out to his home to have a look at his washing set up which is incredible by the way, but then he took the time to really explain some of the nuts and bolts to be able to be successful in this industry. I feel Bruce really has a true heart to network with people and wants to make this industry a force to be reckoned with. I really cannot say how much of an honor it was to have a few hours of his time and for him to teach and share with me the valuable information to help me get started the right way. I look forward to getting to know you folks on here and thanks for contributing to my success, I hope that I can do the same for you. I think that if I can approach things the way that Bruce is I will do just fine. Great Guy! Thanks Bruce.
