There are 2 types of the SH, one is yellow/clear, and the other is much more yellow.

We greatly prefer the Yellow kind of S H, because it contains more left over S hydroxide and it cleans and lasts in the tank more better.

The clear/yellow type is more "refined", better for swimming pools perhaps, but not as good for cleaning roofs!

Hey Chris, I always thought the color was more of an indication of strength,..the longer it sits the less yellow it is and as a result weaker. Didn't ever see a clear type of SH,..just weaker,..like off the shelf at Wal-Mart.

Well, here in the Tampa area, we fill our tanks by pulling our flatbed truck up to huge  SH Tanks.

I have been there when these tanks were nearly empty, and had to wait for the tanker trucks to fill them.

The stuff was clear/yellow, when it was fresh, right out of the tanker truck.

There are 2 major makers of SH here in the Tampa area. One makes the clear/yellow stuff, and one has the less refined, yellow stuff.

The Yellow stuff is much better we find.

Jeff;

the yellow/clear is what most of us use. The SH in fla. is slightly murky looking which makes it more yellow. Chris's clear mention didn't mean no color, just able to see thru it.

The stuff we get, and really like here in Tampa is as yellow as a Yield Sign.

Sometimes, our suppliers are out of the really yellow stuff we like so much, and we are forced to buy the less yellow/clear S H.

We can always tell the difference, especially on a tile roof.

Tile Roofs are much harder to get clean, and your worst nightmare is taking on a huge tile roof on a cool overcast day, with the weaker S H.

I have seen both the yellow SH and the clear Sh. But I haven't noticed a strength difference, and I will need to remind myself to pay attention.

If both are equally the same age, we find the yellower stuff cleans better, and lasts longer, then the less Yellow stuff.

Aloha Chris,

I was wondering if you heard of adding fresh and clear or pixie dust to the mix on those cool overcast days and if it actually works. I think I read about that on a post here. Never actually tried it.

Mike,..I know you've been reading,..and I'm sure you've seen many "concoctions" dreamed up by various members,....But here's the thing,...the best roof cleaning mix for shingled and probably tile roofs is  Water, SH, TSP,...this is the original and best mix in my opinion. Roof cleaning has been over thought the last several years with everyone wanting to put their own twist on the mix and make it their own. I was doing it as well,..BUT,.a few years ago I decided to use the original mix,..as it is the best. Now,..I will substitute TSP with S Bicarbonate on certain jobs,..but I mostly use the original mix. ESPECIALLY on light colored roofs,...BIG difference.

I am in the minority though when it comes to adding "bubbles" to my mix,...I don't like soapy soap,..A mix can be thickened without the use of soapy type soaps,...In my opinion soapy soap has the potential of leaving a scum on the roof and doesn't flow the dead algae off as well with the application.

Jeff

I also use the tried and true conventional mix with the addition of Gain. I do notice an improvement. Now if you add too much Gain or any soap it will leave a white residue which you obviously want to avoid. However it will wash off with the rain.
