Close call with a BIG problem!!

A week ago one of my helpers Blaine noticed one of my trailers wheels was sitting crooked and I did not take to much to it since it was a full load of SH. Well after the day was done it was still crooked so he looked at the axle and said it was bent! I was like what! So took a peek and one side had been eaten away from a leak I had years ago that I could only fix by replacing the bulkheads furious I hate replacing those things because they are a PITA. So on the way home I dodged every pothole, bump, slow rolled over railroad tracks and so on. So I called to get another axle and it had to be shipped so I had to use the trailer to work and bit my nails all day literally praying that it did not break.

Took it off at home today after my route and put the new one on and had to share this pic of the axle. My wife came out and said ok let's see this axle Mr. Big Deal out of nothing. She saw it and went back inside after agreeing finially.

I get so caught up in everything else I miss stuff like this. Luckily Blaine noticed it or I could have created a BIG BIG mess.

If you pull a trailer rig check your axles from time to time, they are really easy to replace if needed. Took me an hour or so, but had to use my Makita grinder to cut the U bolts off since they were too rusted for a socket wrench and bought the new hardware. Total cost $220.00 Just make sure it is an axle from the manufacturer of your trailer so that it is an exact fit.

And yes, as you can see I need to clean my Roof smile I look at it everyday when I pull out of the drive and say "when I get home I will spray that spot". But you know how that goes... That is the only spot that gets dirty because of those damn oak trees over my Garage.furious

Once I get home I am usually too tired or just too lazy to spray it. I have today off so I think I will do it later today..

Haha! That was the first thing I noticed!

Definitely got to watch out for problems with trailer axles (trucks too Im sure)

We blew out a hub and almost lost a wheel last summer off our trailer. Then the leaf spring broke a few days later due to driving 50 miles home on 3 tires. This was due to lack of maintenance as well as over loading on a daily basis.

This thread has reminded me to grease my hubs. Thanks.

No problem, that is why I opted to pull a trailer instead of having an in bed setup. There is too many things that could ruin a truck when you have a setup in the bed.

you dont need to go to the trailer manufacturer , the largest maker and supplier of trailer axels is Dexter axels .

My trailer has a custom built suspension to hold heavier loads with one axle. I am going to buy an all aluminum sides and deck trailer this fall 14 x 6 with tandem axles they are only 3500.00 and I am going to have an aluminum ladder rack added. It will stand the chemicals better and will be lighter, not to mention it will look sweet! I will use the existing trailer for certain jobs with tight driveways or for another crew.

I bought a trailer earlier this year brand new. I want 2 trailers for next year, cold and hot water. Any way after puting the floor in it and purchasing a hot box I noticed the axel is just bent a lil. I'm thinking its not a big deal. Is it? what can happen???

I had the same problem with my trailer a few months back. Tires were wearing fast on the inside. The axle was bent and the springs were shot. I had a new axle put on and new springs. I went from the original 3 leaf to a 4 leaf. BIG difference. Of course I just sat there and watched as the trailer repair place did it. I also got new tires. it only took them 40 min to do and ran me about $600.00. Well worth it though. HUGE difference!!!
