Gary--I appreciate all the volunteer work you do at the RCIA.  I'm sure you're giving up something important like sleep, or family time, or time to run your own business to do it.  It's a thankless job, so THANKS!  The only way I wouldn't like you is if you drove a white GMC or Chevy Dually.  Merry Christmas!!!

Are any of these "hoops" anything that you are NOT doing, or should be doing at preasent. I would hope that anyone that is operating a professional business would already be doing most of what is presented here, maybe just not documenting the results or accomplishments. Again, as I said before, Certification is not Mandatory, it is optional.
Gary

Not that certification is going to make me any more money, it is part of the reason I paid the $100.00 and spend a lot of time here.  I had faith that this would be done before spring and I could use the certification in my advertising.  After AC's webinar I'm ready to go.  I'm sure his other webinar is gonna get me more revved up.  Gary don't take any of this personally,  I don't think anyone here is working any way near as hard as you are and you'll be missed when in the hospital.  MERRY CHRISTMAS

Alrighty guys. Let me help clear a few things up.

1. We are not the government, but the government already has a certain amount of rule over all business and we are not empowered enough to contradict such rules.

2. All standards and business plans are evolving 'living documents' that are amended as needed. Some standards can take years to incorporate.

3. This was presented for Christmas time as a gift. I pretty much expect it to get voted down. Guess what happens then?? We get to talk about it and change it to something better!

4. I Vote no. I think we should write it as a blanket standard rather than a members standard, so that people may claim to adhere to at just as we claim to adhere to the arma statement. I also do not think it should contain anything about certification and instead be pledged to by all certified members and the education requirements for certification will only be stated in the certification process. I think those requirements should be easily filled from any number of sources that can meet the criteria, many of which could be found for no to little cost to the certified member. This is here to be decided on, no one is trying to force your hand. Let's take this really really good start, finish it off and send it on it's way.

5. Thank you to those recommending changes. That's how we can amend it now and vote it in later.

Very well said Bill.  I'd previously thought of a 'code of ethics' per se' although your blanket standard serves it even better IMHO.

Respectfully,
Ted

I have read all the posts and my head is spinning. Are we not voting on a evolving documentor is this engraved in stone?

I am tracking along the same input quoted above in this post.

Now I work for the railroad and the government is deeply involved. You would not believe the hoops I have to jump through to maintain my engineer certification. But on the other hand I could also blow up a whole down or city when I drive my train through. Yes, I am hazmat and OSHA certified and the RR pays for that training.

We as roof cleaners do have hazmat materials we use and do subject the public to such in our application(s), transportation etc. Now as to what certification should be required? I just recommend we don't take this over the top but at the same time don't take it lightly either. My concern is not for the brother already certified, because they have learned OJT, someone had to. We need to focus on what this profession will look like going forward.

I can tell you I was the first service in central Iowa as of last August, today there is no less then (4) others claiming roof cleaning service today. I am sure you see my point.

I am a firm believer of the K.I.S.S. principle keep it simple stupid.

I voted Yes, not because I agree with everything, which I don't, but because we have to start somewhere, provided this is a evolving document. If it is not evolving then I would vote No.

I to was in VN in 1969 Sempi Fi.

Hat's off to the board members for putting in all the time and research needed to come up with a plan like this. Great Job. This would definately prove that you are qualified to clean and run a roof cleaning business. I would love to be certified under these guidelines, however, until I become a little more established in the roof cleaning trade to where I can make the transition to full time roof cleaning, I will most likely not have the extra time and cost needed to obtain this certification. Being in the remoldeling field every year I find more certification's and classes that I need to keep up on just so I can stay in business. It gets overwhelming at times since I am a 2-3 man operation and I, as one of those men, need to be in the field at all times. Hopefully after this coming season I am more established in roof cleaning and can become certified by the following season. Thanks for the option of not making this mandatory to be a member. My vote would be Yes to great guidelines, but No to if I am ready to obide by these guidelines.

The last thing I would like to say on this topic is I am so glad for this section so premium members can voice their opionon freely and in private. This board has alot of intelligent people at the helm and Gary is at the top of the list, what he has accomplished here is terrific. I hope Gary that you have not taken many post here to heart, written statements can come across screwed up and not how they were intended. As the money thing goes,I hope in time these men can be paid for their time and knowledge....why not! I know this will all work out and we all will continue to be proud members of RCIA! So Merry Christmas to GARY and everyone here on RCIA and thank you all for EVERYTHING!

Hi Gary....My company like many others is on the up and up. I don't want to sound mean or angry to you Gary your a hard worker here... it's my business,my American dream not a FRANCHISE.

That is a very VALID point!  this is not a franchise, and alot of this stuff we are trying to implement is way out there , how a man runs his business is on him, Im a certified welder from accredited school and have to none of these thingsto hold my certification, I do not have to take extra classes, all i have to do is pass the test to get the job. we are not Mc Donalds or wendys or roto rooter.
I think i had mention this a while back ago, where is this forum really going .
Ive worked for fortune 500 companies in the industries and was not required to half these things, cpr, fall saftey, high lift trainning , Crimmnal back ground checks ,
alot of this does not make since to me. alot of these should be up to personal companies not the RCIA. IMHO
Are we gonna become an ACCEDITED Institution?
Are we gonna have to use certain brands of equipment next?

dont get me wrong I agreee  with alot of these ideas but alot I dont...
how I run my company is up to me.. I myself do not use a lift, My insurance only insures up to 3 stories just like most peoples here, I have yet used a lift in the last 3 yrs..
Now I do use a lift out at SILVER DOLLAR CITY, One of the biggest entertaiment companies in the world , guess what ?  They do not require me to be a certified operator to run thsi lift a  120 ft lift or take a trainning class to operate this lift

Wow, thats alot to read, We really want to install all these rules.  I don't think so.  We don't always give written proposals.  It is impossible to do.  When we are out in the field and a neighbor comes over and says can you do mine We say yes and we give them a verbal price and we do it.  Lots of rules. Too many.  I voted NO.  Alos we talk about the rcia doesn't recommend using TSP because it's out lawed in some states, but our Vice President recommends littering which is outlawed in all states.  Being a good steward to our Earth also means that the RCIA can not recommend throwing baggies out a car window.  There's my two cents guys.  So lets hear it.

Doug;
Two points for clarification. The Vice President is explaining a concept that worked well for him is the past, not the President, Chris Tucker. NO where is it stated, or even mentioned, that RCIA recommends throwing baggies out of car windows. Please don't read more into this than there already is. I know you and Scott have had a intense discussion over this topic, but please don't bring it here.
Thanks and Merry Christmas.
Gary

Sorry Gary I meant Vice President and I will edit it..  What I am getting at is if the Vice President of an organization recommends something thant he organization must recommend it.  Just don't know how we as an organization can set all these stipulations am I missing something?  Do you write formal proposals to all your customers? Do you use TSP? Does any of the board have all this training they are recommending?  I've seen board members on roofs without fall protection and I've seen others not wearing respirators.  All I am saying I think you guys are starting off very large.  You can't say one thing and do another.  This is nothing personnel to you.

Gary-- I saw a pic of your truck a while back when I was reading about signs. I could tell from the side it was a GM product with drw. Obviously I was just kidding & you got it. Some of my friends & family drive GM products. People will figure out how hard you work while you're recuperating.

Doug;
This is exactly what is being mis-understood by most. We are not going to start the RCIA police that is going to be traveling around and looking over your shoulder to see if you are doing everything that is being proposed. If everyone would look at this more like guidlines than orders, it would be better understood. Anyone that thinks they have a perfect business and are perfect managers are sadly mis-taken. In my 30 years of corporate life I attended 2-3 schools per year. Things are constantly changing and if people think they don't need  freshing up, they are in trouble.
As far as the Vice-President, he is explaining this principle in his training classes that are entirely separate from RCIA board decisions or actions. RCIA has NO opinion on this matter. You are correct about the people not following the safety practices, and this is one more reason that RCIA needs something like this document. To make people more aware of the image they are projecting. Its not going to pass anyhow, so why discuss it. Certification is not mandatory so why bother? This was 3 weeks shot to hell.
Gary

There are a few important things here for us all to recognize.

1. We got nearly 40 votes on this document. The RCIA never before now had any piece of policy voted on by the members. Up or Down that was AWESOME!

2. We had debate and no one got killed :)

3. We found out new perspectives and opinions that some of us didn't know existed.

4. Though many of us thought that certification was very important to the membership, we actually found out that there is a large group that is actually not interested in certification.

5. We worked together as an association, following a process, developed by different levels, exec officers, BOD, premium members and reg members, to move the association forward and develop its future. This was a huge step forward for the RCIA!

What we thought was going to be the present to the roof cleaning world wasn't and something better was given!!!!!

THANKS & MERRY CHRISTMAS,

AC
