In G2 Roof Cleaning every single employee in covered with workers comp, we are required by some commercial accounts to have WC and its well worth the money to have it anyway.
Not much I can add to this discussion. I will say this.... This topic is a good reason for using a payroll company for your payroll. We have different pay rates/types. When we call in our hours, we state xx hours for normal washing and xx hours for roof cleaning. These have different WC rates. Step on a roof or that ladder and the rates are higher. To save money, you need that paper trail of hours on ladder/roof versus ground guys, office help etc. That third party payroll helps aid in this. So during audits, you aren't stuck paying the high roof rate all across the entire payroll. The girl in the office is 1.5% while the guy watering is 4-5% and the time on roof is hit at 30+%.
The WC that Brians wife is likely a good option because it will be determined on ACTUAL payroll needs. It just needs to be set up with Payroll to have different pay structures set within your payroll. As simple as having seperate rates for straight time, overtime, holiday time, roof time, ground time, office work etc... Good records help with your in house operations too. Helps you to be able to see where money is going. Without the recods, you could pay the higher premium across the entire staff.
All that said, remember threads like this and $$$ coming out of your pocket when you go to the polls and vote. Be sure you are voting for folks that want to look out for businesses and not bums that "might" get hurt while working for you. WC is simply another TAX on businesses to take from the successful to give to the not so successful. We pay for years while someone else claims the payout.

Micheal is right. The office worker, salesman and even the owner of the company wont pay the same rate as the roof tech. This is where it pays to have a good rep to break it all down for you. Send me a PM or Call to get a quote even if you have it now I guarantee you can save money and it is a great time to start on Jan. 1

Brian correct me if i am wrong but here in Ohio we have to purchase it through the Ohio Workers compensation burea. We can't just buy it through an insurance company.
LOL, Workers Comp to be ON a roof is very expensive here in Florida. Some roof cleaning companies claim to have it, but really do not. They purchase Workers Comp under a janitorial code, then proudly scream "We have Workers Comp" as they low ball roof cleaning jobs. They are NOT covered to be over 6 feet in the air. We recently blew out a competitor trying to pull that chit, and take our job. I exposed him for the liar he is.
We have it and it is expensive. If you ever have to use it it will probably raise your premium considerably. You will need it in order to bid any government job, and most commercial jobs. It is an important step for MD companies that want government bids from DC. I really hope we get to clean the EPA one day, it's a filthy and beautiful stone building.

Interesting, it is a little different here. Good idea to always check with your state labor and licensing department
The state of Illinois requires WC for all employees. This includes full-time, part-time and even family members. Officers of a partnership or company, who are also to the actual work, are not required to carry WC for themselves. The WC rate for "roofers" in IL is roughly 25-35%!
