We bought some Arm & Hammer w/ OxiClean Laundry Soap the other day. We mixed it together and it seemed to work decent...also took the SH smell completely away.

Anybody else try laundry soap before?

oxyclean is a sodium percarbonate product.  Which technically speaking should chemically neutralize sh.  However maybe your using a low enough level of it . . . dunno. How bad was the roof?

Commercial products like this are probably meant to go together with a chlorine bleach for laundry, so it may have a conditioner already in there or act as a stabilizer.

Nice bob, let us know how it goes after a few more.

If it got rid of the SH smell that would be big.

Maybe, if there are effects it wouldn't be seen unless you let a mixed batch sit overnight.  Sounds intriguing, will be checking my local grocery store!

That was our thought...you mix it with bleach to wash clothes? Did a lot of reading and it really didn't seem that bad. The local chemist I'm working with is coming up with something "perfect" so we'll wait and see. In the mean time I figured I would try this...and the smell....is GONE! Arm & Hammer seemed to be the best bang for the buck. I was worried the cheap stuff was to thin. The prices may vary from location to location.

We just added a little at a time to see how it sprayed.

Hi Bob ,
How is that OXY working for you so far?
Is it the same cleaning effect like with Borax (acctually better since can remove SH smell)....?
How much you add to your batch and are you mixing it night before?

Cheers

Igor

I've used Laundry detergent as a surfactant for the last 12 years.

The Oxy products will neutralize the chlorine in time. How much time depends on how much you use.
It does this by breaking down the chlorine on a molecular level so WEAR YOUR RESPIRATOR!
It will increase the chlorine gas. Make sure your tanks are vented.

The sodium bicarb in the mix is also a good help.

I don't recommend this method. But, you are on to something.
You may want to continue to research using the pure components of that product at various strengths rather than the product as it sells.

Something in there boosts oxidation, something else reduces odor and stabalizes the mix, something else provides the surface tension and cling.
Any thing else isn't really needed and buying the first three in bulk is cheaper.

As David stated,..there are those here who have used laundry detergent over the years. Back when I tried it,..it didn't seem to make soap suds the way Dawn dish liquid would,...but,..my thought process has changed since then,...I'm only concerned now about thickening the roof mix, and don't want or need the sudsing action,... the laundry soaps will thicken. So this will fall into the category,.."Use it if you like it"

For those who do like the soapy action and want to try laundry soap,..make sure you don't buy the HE(High Efficiency) type. It produces less suds.
I think the powders are a better deal than the liquids when it comes to laundry detergent.

But Matthew is correct,..figure out what you need in the mix,..and buy it in bulk if possible.

Jeff

Hey Aaron,..don't ever be afraid to post something,..if you ever go back and look at some of the ideas the "pros" used,..you may laugh yourself.

Laundry detergent covers the SH smell better than anything else I've tried. Just doesn't cling as well as Dawn.

I'm using SH/Hang Tite/tsp/Gain. I sometimes use the green apple fragrance from PWP. PWP is about 5 miles from my house.

Now someone will say,.."Hey,..why don't we mix the Dawn with the laundry soap" Cling and cover the smell at the same time!!

Come on,..someone say it??? It may be an idea for some.
