North Vs. South

Ok Boys, it's that time of year again when the Birds fly south for the winter.

So here are a couple questions for the Northern Boys (Girls)
1. When does work slack off due to the Birds?
2. What do you do to compensate?
3. When do YOUR Birds come back?
4. Do you lick your wounds or prepare for battle in a few months?
5. Have you thought about tracking the Birds and working in the South?

Southern Boys
1. When do your Birds show up
2. How long till you hear from them
3. What % of your winter work is for the Birds?
4. When do YOUR Birds leave?
5. What do you do in anticipation of their arrival (sales)

Feel free to add to the questions....

By the way Happy Labor Day to All!

I am assuming by birds you mean the colloquialism "snow birds"... those that travel south for the winter. Speaking for my customer base I really cannot tell you if that happens or not. Once Thanksgiving comes around people are into holiday and hibernation mode. The outside is just not important as everything goes dormant. We get some housewashes as I run ads for "cleaning before decorating". Other than that Dec-mid March are dead. The first sign of a 50+ degree day, my phone usually starts ringing again.

Actually, I'm not booking any more work past Oct 12 because that's when I plan to pick up my stuff and head to one of the Gulf states. The economy here in Michigan is a disaster and I am lucky to get work at the low end of the pay scale.

So maybe things will be better in a warm climate with a more stable financial environment?  Louisianna and Texas have realtively low unemployment figures and we all know that they are loaded with GM so who knows?  I might end up living in the South in a couple of months?

I stopped cleaning roofs about the middle of December last year and didn't start again until the beginning of April. I had calls for work and gave the estimates, but I scheduled them for the start of the season in April. After I winterized my equipment, I didn't want to go through all of that again to do a small job here and there.

We work as long as it is above 40 and not much wind. When people call and need it done I put them on the list and tell them when it gets close to 50 we can come and do it. I will take money anytime of the year, and in the winter we need it more. We also clean a lot of houses and stuff in the winter.

I work in the asbestos workers Union doing fiberglass and rubber work on chillers etc.
Great way to meet clients in the commercial and industrial fields.

We generally operate from March 1st through December 20th. Remember as the temperature drops you may end up using more chem on those jobs.

138394, If you don't have a decent amount of work lined up in March this is definitly the way to go.
