Well this week put out about 4000 post cards... had 2 guys put them on driveways. I got 4 calls so far, 2 complaints saying that we are making their neighborhood look bad. the other said you can't throw them in the driveways no soliciting etc etc then she said that the neighbors are talking bad about our company because we put them on the driveways. but have two estimates to do today. I wanted to know what you thought about that....should i just do door hangers, it would take a lot longer to pass out? thanks guys

Yard signs guys... yard signs! trust me, yard signs!biggrin

(Pat - sorry to hijack your thread momentarily)

Ivan - please fill us in?  I had 3 yard signs out last week, and 4 additional ones out this week with no additional leads from them.  If you have some secret yard sign juju - please share.  (Ok - three of the signs out this week are on cul de sacs  -  argh!)

I think that the tricky part for this is determining effectiveness versus efficiency.  It will likely vary depending on the region, demographics,  'awareness' of roof cleaning etc.

IMHO, the bagged messages tossed in a driveway don't promote a classy, professional image.  I'm not judging or condemning, just freely sharing thoughts as a consumer.  (emphasis on the word consumer).

I'd suggest some comparisons to capture ROI / customer acquisition costs via postcard campaigns for one's own area/market ?

Example:  Deals closed based on 4k flyers fast (bagged) vs deals closed on 4k flyers placed on doors or mailbox POSTS.  The latter would need to include additional hourly wages of the people distributing them.

I betcha the numbers will dictate the best approach.  (Lead from the heart, yet manage by the numbers!)

Of course this doesn't take in to consideration other marketing methods in play at the same time, which could alter either results considerably - in a good way  smile

hey you are right!

I did realized that placing  door hangers or flyers it takes 2 guys!   you have labor plus flyers = a lot of money!

with this money is better to send direct-mail and it will be cheaper!

I personally like to go door to door when I have the chance. I use an oversize post card (it fits nice in most doors) I want to get a chance to be in front of the potential costumer and sell him my product. If they are not home then I leave the post card. just signed a 500 dollar one today from a post card I put out two months ago. He was skeptical that I couldn't do what the before and after pictures showed but now he believes.

I agree.  Door to door is our favorite approach also, but what's most important is name recognition. This can only be achieved via persistence, time and some hard work.  Flyers, post cards, yard signs.... They are all good.  Yes, you will get an occasional complaint, but in the long run, If you do a good job, your name will be remembered, the calls will come in, and your business will grow.

We also do yard signs. We have not seen as great as response as flyering but when we hand out our check it out flyers they know where the house is and don't really have to go looking to much!

I have been thinking about the rock and flyer thing. And if some one was to throw one in my yard I would be like its just one more thing I have to pick up and throw away. I agree that it is a faster beter way than going door to door leaving hangers. But why not put some marbles and maybe a pen that has company info in the bag instead of a rock. You can find marbles on ebay about ten dollars for 300 . I know it would cost more but if someone threw that in my yard I would be like cool a free pen and marbles to put in the fish tank or give to kids. Then you have a better chance of the customer reading the flyer. Just some of my thoughts.

The Pen things is fine BUT NO MARBLES!!! remember if there are young kids this presents a choking hazard! I unfortunately had this happen to me when I was a toddler and turned blue.

What ever you decide to use keep it kid friendly objects

I actually was going to use small frisbees as a form of advertisment, now my secret is out!biggrin

I knew a guy (home repairs, painting, etc.) once that drove thru neighborhoods and threw his business cards out the window that were paper-clipped to a penny. he would throw them in the location where the newspaper was sitting in their driveway. Just about every other week I would get one in my driveway. I never complained --- I'm sure some people called him. He got a lot of business out of it though.

I dont like to do that type of marketing.... I'll do door hangers though.

After just reading about "the system" that is being talked about in another thread, I am now taking a different look at this. I didn't go to Florida - so I guess I missed the presentation. There's a pretty good chance I'll be at Charleston though!

And dont forget, if you throw a glass marble on a concrete or asphalt driveway, Its going to shatter! Then you have a baggie full of shards of glass. And an angry customer with bloody stumps where his fingers used to be.

I kind of favor the penny idea. Its cheap, sort of sends an affordable message and who is going throw away a penny these days. It might be best in a bag if calling for rain though

Personally, I would never think about simply placing a flyer on someones driveway.  At least hang it on the door handle of the front door or put it in the paper box.  If our neighborhood was littered with flyers I think I would be upset also.  Remember homeowners can easily distinguish a professional business vs a fly-by-night company by several factors (quality of ad material, method of distribution, etc.).  Hope this helps.

Wow, mallard systems must have been the most unprofessional company in Florida, you know having sent out over 10k rock flyers every 6 weeks. Nobody tell them that, they thought they were successful.

Mike - I'm with you 100%.  As I mentioned previously, it's about knowing the demographics or your target customer base AND weighing efficiency against effectiveness.
What happened to fostering a learning atmosphere on the forum Scott?

Mike - PM or call me and I'll share with you what is working very well for me.

I'm all about the learning enviroment, I just find it rediculous when someone who's been in this business for a year calls the methods of the most successful company in the US unprofessional. Of course everyone has their own opinion but when you're here to learn how to be successful, you should really take the advice and LEARN.

We have just started the rock tossing as well and found out very quickly the weight of the rock is a big factor... If using pennies it might be 20 cents a pop.

There is a local place that will print 1,000 door hangers for about $60. I think that's probably a safe, nonobtrusive way to get the word out. My plan is to hang them on doors during the day when no one is home, just to plant a seed. Then maybe canvass that neighborhood 3 days later.
