just wanted to ask the guys that use ropes and safety harnesses. what other equipment do you use for example rope grabs, lanyards, ascenders, carabiners? another question what are your thoughts on tieing off points? where do you prefer tieing off to, and where you dont? another one for you guys, what knots are you guys using and where? hope you guys can help and thanks for your time.

hey there micah how's it going? i dont think you recognize me but i heard learned alot from you on windowcleaningresource.com. i would say the best window cleaning forum by far. and gotta say the same for the RCIA forum when it comes to roofs. the reason why i brought this it up is cuz i already own a petzl body harness, carabiner, and 300 ft. of climbing rope. but dont have rope grab or ascender. petzl makes both but dont know which to purchase being that which one wouldn be most useful. heres the links to the products i have in mind http://www.jracenstein.com/store/Itemdesc.asp?xCc=mep8h&ic=93%2D50&eq=&Tp=
and no micah i dont shop there for my window supplies but theyre one of the only companies that carry high rise equipment. well hope i get some good advice from the RCIA vets. thanks for your time.

Hey Yovani! Yes, WindowCleaningResource.com is the best window cleaning forum by far. Best place to get window cleaning equipment from too, but I think you're right, they don't sell high rise equipment.
You can usually find the high rise equipment locally from an outdoor climbing place. I don't do any high rise work, but know some of the local guys buy some of their gear like descenders and ascenders from places like that vs. buying online.
You may find it difficult to get advice on this. I've heard of some tying off to chimneys or to their truck. They may do this personally, but may not want to instruct others too due to safety reasons.
Honestly guys,...if the roof is steep,...just spray it from the roof edge from the ladder. let gravity work for you. There's no reason to ever tie off when cleaning roofs,...the product will flow.

Jeff
That's good advice. I'm guessing for a commercial roof, like a large condo building, it would be wiser to use a lift as well.
jeff so you spray from the ladder whenever possible even on 2 story homes. i currently have a fatboy and get great distance with it but for some reason i would think if you get on the roof and are properly tied off using a tree for example, then you would be able to spray from the top without the worry of falling off the roof. instead of moving a pretty big extension ladder to spray from it knowing that youre gonna have to move it a couple of times and not to mention being all the way up there with hose in hand. just some thoughts.

A big thing to consider is the threat the SH has on the fall protection equipment. You also have a lot more setup time involved in rigging vs. using a ladder from the gutter line.
you are right on the effects the SH would have on the equipment. but just to know if there is anyone out there that uses fall protection equipment, what other pieces of equipment do you use in conjunction with your rope and harness? i posted a couple of links on the a prior post on this thread. please let me know which one do you think would be more useful? thanks for your time guys.

It would take more time to move around on the roof while keeping your self properly tied off than it would moving a ladder around. Then there is the problem of finding something safe to tie off to.
Handling ladders and setting them up properly comes with the territory. When moving ladders,... very slow and in control is the key. I agree with Marcus,...by the time you fooled around tying off,...the use of a ladder would get you the job half done in the same amount of time.
This work isn't that complicated. And yes,..using a lift on big jobs is more ideal than tying off.
i will keep that in mind, well thanks again for all the info guys.

just something to think about. In roofing we usually send a guy up on the roof with a harness on but not tied off to anything, he then installs a harness hook at the peak of the roof and then attaches his harness. then he puts more harness hooks as needed for the other guys. this being said about 5 months ago we had a guy go up on the roof to attach his rope to the hook missed it slipped and fell two stories down breaking his leg, I mean two bones sticking out the skin yuk. I am just saying this because there is still some danger in getting your harness set up on the roof at all times. Use a ladder and treat the roof from the eves at all times if possible. just my thoughts

If you are to use a rope and harness you would not anchor your hook into the shingles, you would throw your rope up over the roof to the other side and anchor it to the deck post, tree, or something sturdy, If there is nothing to tie off to I use water tanks.
then you climb your ladder and run the rope through the rope grab then you climb the roof.
You need to know what your doing before using ropes , and harness.
you need to know how to tie knotts, anchoring, rope-grabs, harness, and ropes, and yet you should still not work alone.
I received professional training before using ropes.

What distance are you getting with the fatboy? My delavan shoots 'bout 25 feet.
gutterdog my fatboy is pushing about 25-30 feet vertically with a 0050 nozzle. Walk gotta agree with all the points you made. if you dont mind me asking Walk, what knots do you use? you also mentioned that you use ropes. Walk can you please list what pieces of equipment you have in your fall protection set up?
