Nother question about a tank
Permalink

I think I remember seeing it somewhere else or something, but I can't seem to find it now.I just got a free holding tank today. When I got it home,I took the top off and seen it has a drain plug in the bottom. My question is this.Is it possible to plastic weld it up,fiberglass it,or would it be ok for a while? Thanks for any kinda info or opinions.I'll try to get a pic of it in the morn. and post it

I just asked a similar question awhile back.

Plastic welding would be best, BUT as Tucker informed me, the nylon in the plastic weld will only hold up for awhile (maybe a season) as it will get attacked by the SH.
Read here.  You are better off without any bulkheads or drains from the bottom, but it will work for awhile, I did it.

Did that tank have fertilizer in it? I think that a fiberglassed repair would not hold up long??

I'm not exactly sure Lori. From my understanding it was just used to water the golf course lawns,it had a sprayer that hooked up to it,I let him keep that part.I mean it's been sitting a while, but there's no destinct smell like chemicals where in
it though.I'm sure I could find out from them to be sure.I'm notta golfer, but I do love to ride golf carts and drink beer...lol

Carolina I think that tank was used for pestsides or fertilizer. I looked at few tank off pest control trucks that look the same as that tank.

Just speculating here, but how about a good dose of JB Weld to seal it up?

Most sealers are going to fail pretty quickly. If you can find a 55gal plastic drum or two, they will serve you better than that tank.

Ray,I thought about the same thing just yesterday, but I haven't checked on what chemicals it'll take, because I DO LOVE some JBWeld...lol...And thanks Bill,That's what I'd asked earlier,I don't understand why a coupla 55gal drums tied in to each other wouldn't work for a while.I mean there's no bottom plug,no bottom feed, and they're pretty durn durable so you can put in a bulkhead. The only downside,I guess, would be the swaying matter,in which if they were strapped down good enough, that would eliminate that, right.?

If your just getting started and can not afford a big tank, use the 55 gl drum idea. If you have any car washes, like car spa or something around you. Most of the time they will have 55 gl drums next to the building waiting on someone to pick them up. They may just give you one, or buy you one for a very cheap price from them and it will help you out. Check around, if you have a question just call or look around in your area for a place to get a 55 gl drum.

I think I may try that just until I can afford a 'good' tank anyways.I'll just have to calculate where the gallon marks will be,but that shouldn't be a biggy because I love math.Thanks.I'll let ya''ll know how it works as soon as I can get the rest of my stuff together

If your trailer is wood bottom you can build a wood frame around the drums with 4x4 2x4 and lag bolts.  Also check out Bob jr.s Pics from Michigan, he is doing the same thing for now.

If you get a 55gl drum you will not need to mark, it is marked on the sides in 5 gl increments. The clear white ones would be the best for you or the blue ones if need be because you can still see in them slightly.

If you get your SH in 55 gal drums they usually let you keep them. That would be a way to get you a tank for free.

I got my clear poly drums from a small hardware store. You never know what they may have in the attic or rear of the building. They were $25 each. I used a leftover blue drum for fresh SH already labeled with SH stcicker.

OK so plastic weld isn't good for a tank? I got a 125 gal leg tank for free but its cracked near the top. I was going to get it welded but no use spending the money on it? If its near the top the sh won't always be touching it it might be ok?

You found clear Poly drums Bill? I called around everywhere looking for those.  What did they typically store in them??  Maybe that will lead me in a better direction to find some.
