What is the fastest and cheapest chemical to use to remove rust stains on a roof? House has stains from a old TV antennae mount, and a vent pipe which has no lead cover over it. Just steel pipe. Stained pretty bad. Can it be applied from the gutterline? Impact on gutters and plants?
that would depent on what kind of roof it is down here we have painted tile roofs so anything that removes the overspray will probably remove the paint on the tile with it but if its shingle ive used laquire thiner with no damage but it only sat on the roof for a few seconds before an aggresive rince

Hi Billy
I am talking about latex/acrylic water based paint. some times over time the paint runs down the asphalt roof and stains it. How do I get it off? If necessary I will take a picture of what I'm talking about.

I assume you clean the whole roof first, and when it dries you go back and start spot cleaning any stain such as rust, and etc.
Anyone trying the Iron Out product, wear your respirator.
I had a big surprise today when applying it to rust on asphalt shingles. My helper threw the mask up to me immediately.
Fumes from the stuff are very potent. The roof had already been cleaned weeks before, and subsequently rinsed by heavy rain. I can only imagine the disaster when combined with SH. This stuff alone was enough to knock you for a loop.
Results on the rust, after application and light agitation with a soft brush, were mediocre.
Has anyone tried oxalic acid at the 1 lb to 1 gallon ratio recommended in this thread?
I haven't checked but I assume that's a key ingredient in Iron Out.
What Clyde said sorta... I've seen chaulking (latex paint broken down) running down on brickwork. Normally it needs to be pressure washed off. Anyone sucessfully softwashed off? With what acidic/basic mix?
As for rust, any acidic formula should work. I have citric based, phosphate based, oxalic acid, muratic acid based cleaners all work.

The Iron Out I used probably would have removed it completly with two applications. I'm looking at the roof today and 90% of the large stain is completely gone. You can still see the heaviest area, however.
I wonder if there's an ARMA solution/approval for rust removal, as there is for algae. I'll have to check that.
I have used Iron out just last week. I have also used oxalic and it works very nice. I thought that the oxalic was pretty aggressive. But using Hyd acid and phos. acid thats pretty aggressive. But mixing SH and Iron out BAD idea.
It depends on the rust, oxalic acid probably will not work since it is most effective on irrigation rust but you can try it, just don't apply when bleach is present if you are planning on cleaning the roof for mildew. I had a situation where a chimney had rust stains from the flashing running down the sides, I cleaned the mildew off first came back a week later sanded the flashing and patched the cracks primed the rust with a primer specially for the rust and repainted the chimney and it has been 4 years and I pass the house frequently when in the Lake Forest subdivision since I am in there atleast once a week and I always look at past work and the chimney still looks great. Plus you can make more money by selling a painting job, even if it is a small section it is not rocket science go to Sherwin Williams or your preference on a supplier get prices on material and price accordingly. Home Depot and Lowes have inferior paints mostly but they do have good stuff as well, don't go cheap, so it lasts longer and you will keep that customer.
