David, I think a backdoor clause is something that every new and veteran roof cleaner should implement. A backdoor clause states that if there is a leak or other damage AFTER you clean, that you have the option and right to have that damage 'dated' to ensure the time of the occurence. Great way to cover your butt.

I was going to start a thread but couldn't find the appropriate place.
I'm not sure about how many of you have heard of carbonite.com but it is a great, great website that will automatically back up all of your files you want on your computer. It backs up what you tell it to initially and when changes or updates are made it will automatically back them up when your on the net, can't even tell its doing it.
It's very affordable ($50 for 1 year, $130 for 3)
Much easier than manually putting everything on a disk every time you make an update. Worth every penny for me to know if something happens I don't lose years of files, pictures, customer info, accounting, etc.
I love it and thought I would pass it along.

I am looking for some insight to designing our contracts. I am familiar with the legal lingo, what I am unsure of is the actual contract itself.

What would be a good starting point for the contents describing work to be completed?

In our other field of roofing we were able to design a very detailed description because there were many factors of the job.
IE:
Shingle type/ color
Drip / Rake edge / color
wood replacement/ additional charges

Etc.

Thanks
Kim

Licensing for the state of Florida?

I am a little confused here as I see a lot of Co.'s stating they are licensed but I have not found a governing board.

What I think is the occupational license (aka business tax) is just that, a tax paid to operate a business within the designated city.
However, I was told that you only pay a tax where the principle place of the business resides.

Clarification on this is very important as I do not want to operate and end up with massive fines.

I live in a unincorporated area of Manatee county and was told by the tax collector that I would not need to pay the tax.

Needing some senior counsel on this...
Thanks and( yes I am posting these items separate as I am working on my degree up the roof washing Ladder... Lol )

Randy, hope this example helps:

I am licensed in my hometown of Henderson, KY. However, I do not do much work, maybe 1-2 jobs per year in town. I do all of my work in Evansville and Newburgh Indiana. Henderson has a clause that if you make less than xxx, you don't pay taxes on it.

As for the license, get a contractor's license. It is much more professional, and looks alot better than a DBA.

That is my point exactly as to where to go to get a pressure washing contractors license.

I would not get a "general" contractors license, that is way over kill and I do not have any intention of doing remodeling or construction of any kind. Let alone Florida's requirements that is a whole subject in itself. ( Min. start-up for this license is big money 50k + , ? when it is all said & done)

From what I have found there is no contractors licensing for pressure washing of any kind, unless I am missing something.

A DBA is only a form of filing for tax revenue and business structure . IE: Doing Business As

It has no relevance as to a governing board overseeing and licensing any industry.
But thanks for your input.

Randy, Florida is a bit different apparently. A general contractor's license around here is prced based upon a percentage ( I think 10%) of your annual estimated gross revenue. If FL doesn't have that option, I would honestly just go with the DBA license or the minimum needed to operate.

Here is a link to a insurance co, and I googled from Chris' s post in a different area, his agent he uses.
I read that insurance for roof cleaning is not popular and there are only a few agents that know how to write the policy's.
Here is a link to get some general information on a basic policy.

Thanks Chris for the post.

You need to shop around. I call JW every year or every other year and they have never beat the prices I get from the agent I have in another city.

They will not insure my equipment since I live close to the water.

Their prices are almost double what I pay for the basic insurance, shop around.

With my agent I have insurance and my equipment is covered.

Most important is that they have you classified correctly, most agents don't know how to classify a lot of services and if something were to happen, you might not be covered correctly and it is not worth taking a chance.

I go through Nationwide out of San Antonio and they beat everyone's prices by a lot, even local agents, some of the local agents were about double the Nationwide's prices. That is why I am with and stay with Nationwide for about 3 or 4 years now, they are really great to do business with.

Setting up a LLC I am required to have a licensing agent that needs to be retained each year for a yearly fee. Does anyone have any input about what the fee should be ?
