I have a large customer with copper gutters that wants their roof cleaned. I'm concerned about discoloration. I'm receiving mixed reviews on whether or not I should do this. What do you think?
Cover the gutters!.... Get a tarp and work in sections, you can slide the tarp under the shingles between the drip edge. As long as your careful you will be fine. Oh and not a big blue heavy tarp but a painters tarp thats thin and see through. Its thinner than a garbage bag. If you can do the impossible jobs then your impossible to compete with. Think about it. Hope that helps, if so post pics when your done. If not I hope your insuarnce is good cause copper is expensive. LOL
I haven't come across this yet. What happens to the gutters? Does it turn them black? If the roof goop goes to the inside, won't it just wash down the spouts?
I have just looked at a roof cleaning job that has copper valley's at the dormer's and copper counter flashing's at the chimney. Anyone with experience on this situation care to share what precautions to take or what the effect of the SH will have on the copper. I was even thinking of maybe spraying cooking spray over them to help the SH from making contact, any info on this is greatly appreciated. Also, if it happens to contact these area's what damage could be expected?
I'm sure it will do something to them if nothing else leave clean streaks. always do test samples when in doubt. always always. just take some SH and put on a hidden area as see what happens?w
I know if he has copper gutters he will be concerned.

I some times have a hard time answering questions here because I wash houses too and some of you guys are strictly roof cleaners so it's different.
If you dont have house washing experience and all the necessary equipment you are lacking different options.

but thats a good question and it's good that your concerned. I'm looking forward to hear what others have to sayÂ
pennies are no longer solid copper, i think they are copper coated zinc. run down to lowes or home depot and buy a long enough section to do some testing on. you can even contact someone who installs them. be careful not to give away your secrets..lol
I took your advice and did some testing on a 3/4" copper pipe. Results -I sprayed a 30% mixture of SH and water at two locations on the pipe, one was sprayed with Pam cooking spray the other area was bare. Bare area was fine, except at the bottom of the pipe where the SH ran and dripped from( pipe was laying horizontal on saw horses), this drip area was pitted and changed to the patina look(blue-green) once it dried. Cooking spray area was protected and no damage occured. I think as long as you rinse the copper after your cleaning it would be OK. As for the job I will be doing, I will most likely try the cooking spray on the chimney flashing and dormer valleys since they are not large area's.
thanks washed up for pointing out pennies are not solid copper but i guess you missed the whole point a penny has enough SOLID COPPER on the surface to give a great test result first of all its thin any results will be known very quickly second i saved all my gas money runnimg down to lowes or home depot when i got plenty of pennies in my kids piggy bank lol. but seriously washed up i would really appreciate a nice to hear remark over a gotta be smarter than you remark lets be supportive it will get everyone further thanks

Hey man, he was just trying to point something out to you,...whether his information was helpful to you or not,.....he said it with the idea of helping you in mind,...I read his response a couple of times and didn't see anywhere that he was trying to be smarter than you. Â
You may as well just move on to a board that suits your needs, if you can't handle a simple response.
Jay, I guess the reason I posted that comment was because if I were to do testing on copper and I did see some damage, I would want to cut the copper to see how deep the damage was. I would also soak it in sh for about 20 min.(average dwell time before it starts to dry) then let it air dry and take a look at it in a couple days (to simulate if it doesnt rain)
I hope that this comment was more supportive for everyone.
I posted that comment to help you, if you dont like my input, you dont have to use it. I am not offended in any way. I just look a litttle deeper into my testing.
By the way, nice 2nd posting....and welcome to the board where we ALL can learn a little something!

Seems like trying to protect the gutters will be a major pita.
Maybe get a price from a gutter company to come and remove them for the roof cleaning then have them re-installed when the roof is cleaned and rinsed so no residue will affect them.
Add this in the pricing.
Covers might have holes, plastic can tear, oil and other things can run off or if spots are missed, etc.... more of a pain than just having the gutters removed so they are not damaged.
Just rinse a lot before cleaning then during then after to protect the plants and grass.
OR
Pass up the job and let someone else deal with that pita job.

Copper over time develops a dark Patina. This Patina will be removed by the roof cleaning chemicals, and a shiny copper left in it's place. We always do a sample spot, to make sure our customer is OK with this, most are!
Find some old copper pipe or sheeting to test. Also if the copper is already discolored at all and Love will clean it, then offer it as an added service.

Hey chris,
Â
I know were getting off roof topic here for some. Â But, is the love good for regular gutters. Â I hit some gutters with some 2 week old left over mix and over sprayed with peroxide then used a rotating pressure washing brush and it seemed to take a good deal of the streaks off. Â (i can tell u guys by watching the chemical reaction on the gutters DO NOT MIX LOVE & Peroxide in the same container). Â They seemed to come up nice, I may have to hit a few spots again though.
