The only thing I can think of is that the ventilation was poor. It sounds like he was doing it in his house? Maybe there was a build up of fumes?

Because calcium H can be dangerous if not mixed properly with water. The article said the man was "diluting pool chlorine (a loosely used word) with water". Calcium H is a bleach/pool shock commonly used for pool cleaning that should be added to water, not vice versa. I could be wrong but I would think he was adding water to powdered calcium H.
