I haven't, but here is an email from a customer:

There's a coating for asphalt shingle roofs that will seal them from water and still allow them to breathe that also contains granules in it,  you "paint" it on and then it dries in 1-2 days.  Do you know anything about this?  I can get you a link for the material they use and it seems to work to seal the asphalt shingles.

Sounds like it could trap water under. If there was a leak the tar paper is your 2nd line of defense. At that point water can kick back out through the shingles.
This coating could prevent that.
Besides that I've only done coatings on granular cap sheet, not on pitched roofs.

Chuck - I saw it at a home show in NC earlier this year.  I wouldn't use it on my roof.

I have seen several "roofing companies" in North Port painting some sort of coating on roofs. Some homewoners have even painted their shingles roofs with what looks to be white paint? I had never seen this type of work on a shingle roof prior to that, if the North Port homeowner had maintained their shingle roof using a certified soft wash system they will not need go to these measures to keep mold and algae off your roof.

Would that also fall under the "coatings" under this link?

Thanks, I figured it would. Another idea that sounds great at face value to uneducated customers. The longer I live the more frustrated I become at times with parts of the human race preying on people that don't know any better for a profit. Not as unethical as fear tactic based salesmanship, but a close runner up.

I never heard of a coating with granules in it, however we do use a paint that has micro ceramic spheres in the coating that is very effective against water and all types of heat.  (UV, Conductive and Radiant Heat)

It is also the only product I am aware of that has a variable permeability effect, meaning when the surface gets wet it swells and becomes waterproof, when the surface is dry it will breath and allow any trapped moisture to come out of the roof substrate.

We use this product on flat or low slope commercial roofs as well.
