I don't want my first post here to be a pitiful cry for help, a quick introduction seems better. That said I will probably follow this up with many cries for help. A proper signature is also incoming.
Right off the bat thanks so much for creating this community, I have already benefited from it greatly as a guest.
After seeing recommendations here Bob from PT did a great job helping me select a small setup to get started. I did not even end up in the doghouse. It worked great right out of the box.
After letting too many things get in the way I finally did a little practicing on a family members garage last weekend (pics attached).
Because of how I came to learn about roof cleaning I did not try SH first, I had some spray and regret powder I had purchased and some OxiClean. I was not quick to try SH because the best price I have so far is 7.39 per gallon. Based on some very old posts I have come across I believe I need to keep looking for a supply of SH.
On the first day with the temperature at 45 degrees I applied 40 ounces of OxiClean mixed with 10 gallons of water to the roof. After close to 40 minutes I rinsed it off and by then it was dark. The next morning we inspected the work and thought it might have made a difference but we were not completely sure. One thing I believe you can reliably expect with OxiClean is that anything you do not rinse perfectly will be white the next day
After being completely let down by the OxiClean I was not eager to try the spray and regret product I have and instead went to town to purchase SH to see if roof cleaning really would work as well as you all make it seem.
After an overnight low of 21 degrees and during the mid-day high of 41 degrees I sprayed 5 gallons of gold, I mean SH, and 5 gallons of water onto the roof. 25 minutes later I climbed the ladder to the gutter line and was blown away. As you can see in the pics the entire house can use some work and I will be back once I solve my SH supply challenge.
I knew immediately that I was going to become a premium member as soon as I got home, I had read about things called surfactants and all kinds of other voodoo I just have to know about. I am having a great time working my way through the overwhelming amount of information available here.
Again, thank you all, I am looking forward to getting to know everyone.

Nice pics. The only thing i can see is you went a little too hot on the mix try 2 gallons of water per 1 gallon of sh. and 16 ounces of surfactant per 50 gallons of mix. good luck to you.
Nice intro. Love the story and great to see that there are still some folks out there that do some research before just blasting away with questions on how to do things rather than doing some reading. BTW, It looks cold there. Burrrrrr!
Welcome Will, to the RCIA! As you will see, if you haven't already, we are more like a Family of roof cleaners, then a bunch of strangers on some Internet Forum. As any family has unwritten rules, so do we. Our guys will bend over backward to help you, but be warned, we try our best to keep prices up.
The Goal here is Certification, That says "I know what I am doing" loud and clear to potential customers. So, we try to sell on our competence and our quality of work, vs price.
Our Goal here in to teach you the right way to clean roofs, Certify you once you learn, then teach you how to sell roof cleaning w/o giving it away. Always remember, the ONLY stupid questions you have are the ones you don't ask. All of us are here to help you hopefully make a fortune, in the lucrative Northern Virginia Roof Cleaning Market you will share with other fellow RCIA Family Members.
Welcome aboard. We are a family here. Once you become acclimated feel free to contact me for any advice. My brothers will do the same. Best of luck in 2013.
Serving the Pocono and Lehigh Valley(Carbon, Lehigh, Northampton, Monroe, Pike and Wayne Counties), PA community as well as both Warren and Sussex Counties of New Jersey
Welcome Will . I'm brand new to this too and trying to absorb all I can like a sponge. Took me a while to learn all the lingo like "Love" and "Sauce" created by Mr. Tucker. Hope to try some practice runs as you did in the near future when I build my rig. I'm out of Fairfax County by the way.
Welcome Will. If you hang around here and read, read, and then read some more you will learn. Then when you run into a problem on the job, there are many brothers on here that are only a phone call away to offer help. One great thing you got going is, you have a beautiful area to work in. The Shenandoah valley is a great place.
