One's CPA, Book keeper, QuickBooks program etc, should be able to provide this information instantly. Another way to look at it is "operating profit", but in a percentage format, vs a dollar amount. Then again, there are many variants of OP, including EBITDA, EBT and so on.
Great post Chuck, as cost management (fiscal responsibility in my prior profession) plays a huge role in how financially successful our businesses are.
I wish I could share but I can't, not publically. Too many copy cats following our EVERY move here in my market.

Glad to hear it Dan! I really like 'em too; wearing one now! Now, consider hiring a dedicated book keeper, taking that responsibility off of you so you can focus on business. My book keeper is also my CPA, AND they do payroll for me. Very reasonable in the grand scheme of things IMHO.
We shoot for field operating costs at 35% or less, so if I bill 1k that day, we need direct cots that day to be 350.00 in payroll, gas, supplies for job service. Does not include rent, phones, insurance, and any other expense.
