I received a call last week from Certainteed to do a roof cleaning for a customer who had purchased Algae Resistant shingles. The roof only lasted about 6 years before the black streaks started showing! I gave the customer an estimate, and certainteed is picking up the tab. I have never cleaned an algae resistant shingle, but I will let everyone know how it goes if I get the job.

The process is the same Dan; business as usual. We do warranty work for the manufacturers too. Most of our clients have to fight hard with them to get them to pony up though. The last one that we did, the HO filed a lawsuit, and it was only then that the manufacturer agreed to pay for the roof cleaning; presuming the suit was dropped prior to the court date.
I also have come across this once the customer told me he would call me after he submitted the estimate. He called me a short time later said go ahead and clean the roof I would have to fill out like eighty pages for them to pay for the cleaning............
Here is a copy of the letter CertainTeed sent to our customer for their AR claim. This is good proof that the shingle manufacturers recommend our process. It surely doesn't say anything about the Shampooer's
Good Stuff. My understanding is that most asphalt shingles are AR now. My experience is that the resistance lasts about 6 -9 years depending on pitch etc.
I have cleaned a couple of roofs this year that were paid by the shingle manufacturer also. Nice things about these, the homeowners were on top of keeping the roofs nice, they took the steps to keep their shingles like new before they were all covered in moss and lichen. The owners had no problem getting the money from the manufacturer
My neighbor a condo in Ft Meyers, his HOA put"Algae Resistant" shingles on 12 buildings about 5 years ago, when they complained to the shingle rep and roofer, that the algae had returned, the rep's reply was that they are only resistant, not ""algae proof"", and they would not participate in any cleaning expenses.

Dan,
You're holding out on me. Glad to hear this. How did they(Certainteed)find you...website, local newspaper or billboard? Are you being paid directly from Certainteed or the customer? I'm sure you'll have no problems treating this roof. Do you have the rep's name? Perhaps we can put together a list of qualified professionals(RCIA) we can pass along to him for future reference.

This is some great stuff guys. When I originally entered this business, my biggest concern was shingle manufactures developing a material that stopped algae growth. Its good to hear the algae keeps growing. The HO had to hassle the company, but the company told us exactly how much they would reimburse the HO for. $780. So as a good business man would, my estimate was just shy of $760.
Hank I have a saying in the business world, its not sold until its sold. So right now its just an estimate. The list is a great idea. He said he had contacted other cleaners, but I'm not sure.
