Downpipes from gutters that go straight into the ground???

Morning, I cleaned a roof yesterday it was large barrel tile it had gutters all round but they went straight into the ground, so after pre-cleaning watering I left a hose running in the gutter until the roof was cleaned then for a while afterwards, I had a ground guy watering during and then we both walked around the property spraying water on plants bushes and grass, have I done to much? or too little?. shouild I go back today and re-spray and how about maybe spraying something like miracle-gro to feed the trees shrubs etc?

any thoughts please lads?

Simon

Simon, I leave water running in the gutter before, during, and after. Sometimes it looks like the house is taking a giant bubble bath if the roof is steep, but you'll be okay doing that. If they are going straight into the ground, run a hose or some type of gutter cane in the gutter for several minutes prior to actually starting your cleaning.

Simon, sound like you did everything right. Its hard to water "too much", more is usually better. For added safety I've been using the Plant Wash from softwash systems and have had zero burn issues ever since.

Hi Simon.  We typically determine where the pipes go to, then base our decisions on that.  C'mon over the premium section and I'll tell you about some readily available solutions to further limit any liability of chlorine damage or the other form of damage to be concerned about......

That's an ugly thought Ray.  And could be a spendy one.  I'm a pond enthusiast and have mostly Sarasas.  The biggest one's may retail for $25 or so.  Not a big deal.

BUT, there is a Koi shop near me with champion koi (not kidding) and some of those fish go for 5k!!!  That would get ugly very quickly.

Ted, was said totally in jest! Just wanted to point put the importance of knowing where your runoff is going to! You are very right , those koi can get real expensive. I've got three regular customers with pretty lush & difficult ponds. Always have fun with those houses! We've got one where we actually take the fish OUT of the pond when we wash!!! It this horrible slate rock/waterfall/infinity edge pond built flush into a flagstone deck...YIKES

be careful, if those downspouts lead into a stream or something and you kill fish you can have a serious problem with our favorite government agency

Sorry if I came across wrong Ray ( I have a tendancy to do that with some I guess?)  I was agreeing with you and trying to reinforce your point as a fellow pond enthusiast.

Keep the sodium thiosulphate handy

BTW - those dang koi eat expensive pond plants, sarassas don't  LOL.

I love it when the downspots drain into the street.

Around here that's bad Marcus...  that means storm drains which means water ways.  I'm sure it's different  where you live.

French drained gutters are my favorite, unless they end at the bottom of a Hawaiian Royal Palm smile. I look for the pop ups in the yard if any or ask the homeowner if they know where they end up, then I leave a water hose without a Y-Valve wide open for 10 minutes per pop up. Have not had any problems with plant damages in 10 years or more and I use only water for plants and never use plastic to suffocate I meant cover plants. I do bag open downspouts though.

Ted, what do you do when that happens, obviously we bag them at the curb but we've had to rinse and collect that runoff too. Actually had to do it yesterday and went through a ton of contractor bags. Next time I'm just gonna disconnect the downspouts, only thing I can think of???

We take the few extra minutes to disconnect from the down spout like you've mentioned.  PM me or call and I'll share with you something that goes along with this VERY nicely....

Yes Ted, normally it is bad.  The private subdivision that I was referring to has its own private dry retention holding pond and does not go to a waterway.

I stopped bagging gutters and just go crazy with a gutter cane, it's crazy sometimes, but it beats dumping bags or taking them with us if they would be flowing towards a storm drain.

Gutter Canes are nice and I use them whenever I have gutters.  But, like Ted said, do not let the water get to the street where it could go down a storm drain.
