Hello all. I have been in the roofing business for over 20 years. Recently I decided to get into the pressure/power washing business because with the economy work has slowed to the point that I just can't pay my bills. While doing research on that business I ran across the roof cleaning business. I had no idea this business even existed until that point. I have been reading some posts here and have decided I think I will give it a go. I'm thinking it could be a very lucrative venture for me as I see stained up roofs everywhere here. I live in New Orleans, and I do not recall ever seeing a roof cleaner, and I think being in the roofing business I would take notice of this. After reading quite a few posts here I think I have the general idea of how to wash a roof. Also I do plan to become a premium member as soon as I can (leaving Thursday for a week on the beach in Gulf Shores so $ is a little short this week) so I can take advantage of all the knowledge from members here as I'm sure I will be needing it. Do they have any members here from New Orleans, or even Louisiana ? And I'm extremely curious as to why there doesn't seem to be any roof cleaners here. Well hope to be seeing yall over on the premium side soon.

Just make sure that you stay firm on your pricing and learn how to clean roof the right way using a chemical cleaning method without any use of a gas power machine like a pressure washer. Shingle roofs should be priced .14 cents per sqft minimum tile .17 per sqft minimum, since you live in an "untapped" area you can charge more and make more.

Just be careful to make sure that you learn as much as you can about doing it the right way and this is a great forum to do so. There are no free handouts though so you will have to just read and research and trial and error with less error hopefully.

Good luck in your new venture, just don't come to Florida. There are too many of us here and a lot of shady under bidders that just need a little crack cash.

Thank you for the pricing info. I havent invested in a rig per say yet, I just grabbed an old water transfer pump I had in the shed (not sure how long it will last with the chemicals, but hopefully long enough for me to order and receive whatever rig Im going to use) and connected it to my pressure washer wand via a garden hose, and the thing shoots water about 40-50 ft. I am looking at some setups online right now trying to decide exactly what I am going to need. I already have my first job, but its a freebie. Im gonna test out my methods on my mother in laws house. Just a bit of strategy there since about 60% of the houses on her street need a good roof cleaning, plus it never hurts to be on the inlaws good side. biggrin Hopefully I do a good job and all the neighbors will be jealous of her nice clean sparkly roof. Her roof is around 45 squares, so if I was charging .15 per sq ft that would be a $675 job correct ? Most of the houses on her street are as big as hers if not bigger, so hopefully once they see the results some of them will want their houses to look as good. I have read many posts so far about how to mix the chemicals and stuff, all I will have to do is find a good place to buy the chemicals, and hopefully I will be able to do it when I get home from vacation. I guess I also have to talk to my insurance agent and see if they will cover roof cleaning, as I kept roofing excluded because of the ridiculous rates, but did include gutter cleaning which still involves getting on a ladder (on most roofs with a 7/12 or below I usually clean from the roof).

Was curious if any zinc solutions have been used to clean the roofs. Reason I was wondering is shingles come with a 5 yr to 7 yr algea resistant warranty, depending on the brand, and all they do is add some zinc to their aggregate mix and everytime it rains it releases some, but after time I guess it runs out. We have even done jobs where they wanted us to install the zinc strips at the edge of the roof caps, which does a pretty good job of controlling the algea.

It is not zinc, it is a copper additive.

Here's a before picture showing how the zinc strips do not work well. Maybe if you put these every two foot throughout the roof!!! I love showing this pic to potential customers who ask if I can install zinc strips after the initial cleaning to keep the Algae from returning.
