There will probobly be no issues in your area for signs. This is Jersey brother, when you go to put up signs you have to battle through jungles of other signs to get yours in.
A lot of the cities around here won't let you go door to door. What I do is drive through the subdivisions write down the street and then the addresses of the homes with a dirty roof. I go back and send out post cards or brochures to the address that I wrote down. I get a few calls from the cards to make it worth it.
I have only 3 words... Internet,,,,Internet,,,,Internet. In this day and age if you are not visible on the world wide web and or do not come up in your local searches your losing more $$'s than you can imagine. I know more guys who do door to door, door hangers, mailers etc... who never make it. I actually recently bought some equipment off a guy here locally and guess what???? Now he's woking for me.
I find that signs work best. Home owners only have 1 number in front of them. They seem to not shop around and call 10 contractors. We sell most of the leads we go on.

I dont know if this the best idea or not, but what Im doing is just driving around and lookking for dirty roofs. Write down the address, then go home, go on google maps type in the address, that will give you the postal code. Me and nino have collected about 700 homes that need cleaning. We started out with flyers but did not achive the results we expected. We just recently got some brochers and sent them out, but wouldn't you know, Candian postal strike, all my advertising is sitting in apost office some where, will let you know the results soon, I dont know when it will get there. But my plan is to get a 2000 costamer mailing list, and there is no limit to that list! Then just mail them all 3 or 4 times a year. Im only doing that just because Im in Canada, our season is for 6 months, depening on your location example deep south, I would do it 12 months out of the year

Do you think a $1000 adwords monthly budget would be a good place to start? I know it takes some time to get at the top of the page and figured my advertising budget wouldn't be nearly as high as the more established businesses in my area, so I wasn't sure how effective google would be for a new business with a very limited budget.
Your competitors will eat your $1k adword budget up in about 2 days. They just keep searching your adwords til your broke!. I never use that form of advertising.
Just make some promo posts on RCIA with the proper tags and you will appear on page 1 tomorrow.

Maybe I am "old school" but flyers are for wimps, to be used ONLY if there is a built in demand for roof cleaning, as there is here in Florida, when they are forced to clean their roof. Nothing beats TALKING with your potential customers, and creating a demand by offering a free demonstration. Until you get good, you will sell one out of every 10 people you talk to vs 1 out of every thousand mailers/ flyers you leave.

You may not like to hear this but sometimes it's just not meant to be and no matter how much time and money you throw at it it isn't going to change a thing. The key is knowing when to cut your losses and try something new. It's not the end of the world just time for something different. Then again I could be wrong

Thats always known, but its not like i have to give up. This is, right now, just an addition to my services. I just would like it to be a bigger addition. And if i do a few more jobs or so, i'll be profiting from the equipment. I was just curious as to what is others, in the field, best approach to selling jobs. Im hoping mine is yard signs. If I could do 1 roof cleaning a week, I would be happy. That would be a lil extra ching to help my fishing addiction.
One day, some will wake up, and find the world aint gonna beat a path to your door to have their roofs cleaned, regardless of what the people told you who sold you your stuff.
You must learn HOW to market what u are selling. If you are successful at selling what you offer, you will be successful, if not, you will fail, unless you do this part time.
There is no Ceiling as to what you can make in the roof cleaning business, but there is also no Floor! You can go broke as easily as you can get rich. Unless you start part time, it takes about 5 years till you can kick back, and just pick up the phone to write orders. That is here in Florida, It may be better or worse where u live. Until then, you must work hard, and not stop marketing because you hit a good day, or a good week. Instead of hitting the Bar, or going Fishing when you have a grand in your pocket, consider taking a painter or a roofer to lunch, or attending a leads group at your chamber of commerce.

your point was well taken but I totally thought you were exaggerating the "page 1 tomorrow" comment. I worked on my site, links, tags, etc a bit today and wouldn't you know, I'm on page 1 ... once again RCIA comes up huge

> Chris, this is the best advice I have EVER seen!!! Truer words have never been spoken ( or typed as in this case).

Whom do I contact about setting yardsigns at intersections, Code officer? Would that only be within city limits? (thats about the only areas where codes are enforced here) Most areas I'm looking to set signs are rural areas that have developments and high priced homes in small townships. Most of the townships in my area have next to no code enforcement.
Thanks Bill
I would think it is better to ask forgiveness rather than permission in the case of signs, unless there is a HUGE fine involved.
