I used ammonyx lo... I'll have to buy a SH test kit to make sure of the potency of the hypochlorite I'm using...
Yes I'm doing it for free, there are lots of houses by the church that have dirty tile roofs. I'm going to use the before and after pictures to canvass the neighborhood with flyers..
I have to disagree about the alcohol....I see the difference big time when I dont use it. Becareful about doing things for free or at a discount. Word does get out and they think you can do them all for that price...be prepared for that.
I would like to know how alcohol chemically enhances the mix. With TSP i thinks its obvious through mere observation of the additional cleaning power. I do know that when i used to use alcohol, the next day when i would open my tank it would practically blow me over from the fumes. So i guess somethings going on but i could never see it.
I'm going to try another test spot today using( 70%SH, 28% H2o, and 1 to 2% ammonyx lo, is a very steep roof ) I would use some TSP but I dont know if is legal to use in California; I have schedule the roof cleaning of that church for Monday June 13 save for rain that might delay the work, I will be posting some after-wash pictures. Thanks for all the input guys!!!! Very greatful
It may be just me but, I think the mix should be tested on your own roof, friends, or relatives roof. This is a huge job and your reputation is at stake in front of hundreds of residents. I don't mean to be a downer but I would never try and learn how to clean a roof on a job this big in front of a crowd. And, like others have said concentrate on finding fresh SH. Not upping the percentage of SH.
50/50 is way to strong, the algae is thick so you might have to hit it twice, if you can get some tsp it will help you out a lot, but a roof this stained will have to be sprayed more than once, A good surfactant is critical, the longer you can keep the love wet on the roof the better. Surfactant is a wetting agent, which means your trying to keep your love working longer before it drys on the roof.
as far as alcohol there is really no benifit unless the temps are in the 50's, it will weaken your mix, I myself use ammox-m 32oz to a 40 gallon mix might bump it to 48 per 40, Im sorry to say , I think if you use even 100% sh you are still going to have to spray it twice, so for cost purposes use 15gallon SH to 25 gallon water 42oz ammox and add 5lbs of tsp... trust me it will be fine
again try keep the love wet as long as you can on the roof , beef up the surfactant
hope this helps
Dave

Mike I have enough to deal with here, keep them in Jersey. Ed about the alcohol all I can say is this. Last year I cut it out all together and by the end of the year even my helper was complaining about how long it took to come clean and having to hit it a couple of times. This year I am saving time on waiting and saving chems by not having to re hit it. My helper even has noticed and wants the answer, but I won't tell him. I see a difference and wont cut it out again.
Im with mike on this one alcohol just kills the batch and cost to much. Im doing a church tomarrow ill post the pics, im doing the church at a low cost to get on the church news letter but in no way would i do something like that for free! im still gonna profit a $1,000 on this but should be a lot more.

Cost too much? Thats the cheapest thing in my mix. It is only $2.50 for 32oz of 91% at Walmart.
It does break down the mix within a day or so. But it greatly helps the SH penetrate into the algea to kill faster. Alchohol is used in just about everything from industrial detergents to skin care products to allow better penetration. That is why Dawn works really good, it has a few different surfactants and 5% alcohol.
