Do you know if he drove there just to bid that job or was he already out there doing another job? If it is the latter then it is an extra $300 in his pocket that he wasn't planning on making that day. $50 or less for chemicals $12 for Service M. and 2 hrs of work sounds good to me. If I am in a neighborhood I will take that all day long if I can stay right there and do all the jobs.
doing a 3500 sq ft home on the jersey shore for $300 sounds good to you? really?

That's right. If I am doing a job 1&1/2 hrs. away and I am asked to do another job right by there for $300 dollars for 2 hrs. of work, you can bet your ass I am going to take the extra money and smile all the way back to the shop. So yes Mike, "Really"I would be a fool to turn down $300. That makes the 3hr drive and all the gas a lot more bearable & profitable. That being said I would not do it for that price if that is the only reason for going that far out. But from what I understand we are not sure that is what happened.
So yes if I am far from home and in your neighbor hood I will squash you like a fugly bug!

If the house next door should be a $ 350 job and your doing it the same day for $ 300 I thinks thats fine. If it should be a $ 450 or more then I think your causing problems for yourself and others down the road. If you are doing my house for $ 500 and do my neighbor roughly the same home for $ 300 I'd be pretty pissed. Then everyone in the future if its your company or not will expect $ 300. I did a small condo for $250 about a month ago, I gave the guy that price telling him I wanted to get in there and do pretty much all the homes. The place should have went for $370- $380 { front and back } I told him to keep it to himself...which didnt happen. The neighbor wanted his done for that price I told him the cheapest was $350..he wanted $250 I didnt do it. I was right there.....I would have made about $200. The point is $200 sounds great... till you have to back up your guarantee, buy a new pump or part, truck breaks down, gas, ins, workmans comp...and so on! Then what did you make? The sad thing is there was once a time here in the N/E that roof cleaning was so new we had a chance to set the price, now that is slowly going away because of the fly by nighters and those who " think " they are doing good by making a quick couple of hundred bucks. I think that type of thinking is killing us all, us the non fly by nighters, the fully insured! For my price { if it's a hundred or two or more } your getting a quality job that will last with a guarantee, your getting a company that will still be around to back up that guarantee. Your getting a company with employees that have had back ground checks and are good citizens who you can feel safe having at your home. " the customer is always right " attitude. Top grade equipment,Ins and so on. Everytime we " lower our price " to much because we are right there the entire industry standard price takes a hit. If I amd doing a house next door to one I am doing right then and there I take $25-$30 off ....the price of gas for coming back and I let them know it.

Last Week I won a job 1 1/2 hrs. from home. Roof, Siding, Driveway & Gutters cleaned out for $600. I'm in a new state just starting back up where no one knows me or my company. So rather than sit and make no money I bid it lower than if I was rolling. She said they looked at the bids and saw mine and said this is a no brainer. While there, a window washer working next door gave me the # of one of his customers that needed house and deck cleaned. I did that job and then drove 20 minutes further out to bid on a roof referral someone gave me. I gave her a price and I did it right then. I drove home that day with $1450 in my pocket compared to no money if I would have bid the first job high to make you guys happy. I do what I have to to survive and get my business up and going and if you cry babies don't like it tough!
The point is if I wouldn't have bid low on that first job I might not have gotten it. Which led to more jobs and more people having my name. Plus she is having the HOA put a little piece about me in their little homeowners paper. Every roof I saw was filthy.

good point, don't think anybody is being a crybaby, just a different business philosophy, not saying your way is right or wrong, but in my opinion it can be penny wise pound foolish to operate that way. like i said, only my opinion and i'm not here to judge you or the way you run your business.
The original post sure sounded like a lot of crying and bitching. I can understand Michael being upset. He thought he had a job and then someone came swooping in and pulled it out from under him. I am being the devils advocate with this post. None of us know the guys situation. If he was already out there just 5 miles away from this job or if he went all the way out there just for that job.
There is no way I am traveling 1 1/2 hours one way just for $300. I'll sit at home and watch TV first. I just can't imagine with gas prices that he did either. Who knows. If he did I think he is nuts. But it is his choice. I wouldn't lose any sleep over it.

i just can't justify doing somebody's roof and taking home half their monthly escalade payment ... honestly i'd rather take the 2 hours and go door to door, i'd get a higher paying job and be able to charge that amount in the neighborhood ... you're right though, we don't know the guys situation and if i had a past due mortgage payment and had to put food on the table i'd do what i had to do
I'm not being a cry baby, I don't care what you do that's your business. I hope you continue another twenty years, I'm just glad your in N.C. I would just like to know what you would have charged for the second home that you are doing for $ 300? We know why you are, just want to know what you would have charged?

That's right. If I am doing a job 1&1/2 hrs. away and I am asked to do another job right by there for $300 dollars for 2 hrs. of work, you can bet your ass I am going to take the extra money and smile all the way back to the shop. So yes Mike, "Really"I would be a fool to turn down $300. That makes the 3hr drive and all the gas a lot more bearable & profitable. So yes if I am far from home and in your neighbor hood I will squash you like a fugly bug!
Yes i do know for a fact that he went there at around 10-1030 in the morning i was there at 9.
Dave,
If i were in the area and i got a call i would not go below 150 of what i would want to do the job. There are other ways to get a job and do it the same time without getting beat on price.
Im not bitching, more or less im complaining or venting. I just dont know why people want to kill there own market and its not like the leads are free you have to pay for them.
