I think our pros could do these tests. As long as they're legit about their proceedures that should be acceptable. This is the Roof Cleaning Institue of America!
Your both correct, but a scientific study will require what is called a relevant sampling, Usually 500-1000 samples and they will all have to be under the exact same conditions to be relevant. I have run into a lot of contractors working for shingle manufacturers that use low pressure pressure washers to clean the roof and the manufacturers are accepting it, so the last thing I want to see is us get sued by them for unproven statements. Yes we can do it in house, but I am not sure we are ready yet, as we have a lot of stuff to get in place to even get the association standing on it's own legs. Right now If I was in a car with Chris, Ac and Gary and we went off a cliff I think the org would be done. But we are not far from having a full BOD and 501c structure, so.... a little time may be necessary and many of these study's will take years to complete.

I'm glad that there is a group of you guys who know their stuff!
I personally would never foresee all that you guys do!
I thank you Bill, AC, Chris and Gary [ and any others who keep things going so well at RCIA ]
Please stay away from cliffs when you are all together!!!!

so here is my plan for the shingle test. take a roof sample area and lay a sheet of copy paper down and use a rolling pin and press the paper into it to get a imprint of the shingle texture. then pressure wash it as if i was trying to remove the mold/algae. then let it dry and repeat the texture test. also try to collect all the granule run off and see how much falls off. and maybe hit it with a surface cleaner to video the damage it is going to cause.
Maybe you can clean out the gutter before starting and show what is in there after both methods. Certainly this is the step in the right direction. At this point what WE do will be more for ourselves and our customers. Maybe you can duplicate some of the power washing videos we've seen and even use a "low" pressure of 1000 - 2000 psi. Just a thought.
Thanks Chuck and it is a lot more than us that have foresight and experience, the collective here has allowed us to jump start and already be at a significant level for a cleaning industry association start-up.
That's a good call Brett and we could create a bunch of those samples with people here. All set to the same PSI on the same age shingles from the same manufacturer, and we would have a study for that shingle.
I want to be a little more clear about what I said about falling off a Cliff and those 4 names, we are not the only ones doing this, but we really did get it started along with the encouragement advice and experience of a ton of people on and off this board. Now we have a lot of people starting to get involved and as we ALL lay the groundwork, it will be able to maintain itself from the body of it's membership.
