James,

It depends on a couple of things.  One is a rule of thumb 10-12 cleanings.  How close your nose is to the chemical mix.  If on a ladder spraying you should change out sooner than your ground person if they are wearing a mask due to distance from the mix.  If your nose is more senstive to oders than others I would suggest you change it out sooner than not.  My opiniion it is better to be safer & change out the recommended full or have face mask filter cartidges to protect you from any chemical you are working with.  Always consult 3M for their filter recomemdation as well for the proper cartidge product based on the chemicals you are using.  One filter is not best for all chemicals.  You should not put a price on your lungs & health verses spending the extra money for your protection with the proper mask & filter cartidge.

Another tip Bill Booz told me at the round table in Charleston, SC. was to always keep your filter masks wrapped up in plastic to protect the filter from exposure to the air, chemicals, etc.

It really helps! My vans have chemicals in them making my filters not last very long, but after I started bagging them I could tell a difference.

I keep mine in large ZIP-LOCK bags to keep them fresh longer.

The hardware stores in Tuscaloosa don't carry 3m 6009. I've never seen one.

i know bill spoke on this in charleston, but has anyone else looked into or used disposable respirators? i know from what he said they sound like they're the way to go as far as not having to worry keeping them after use. i'm not sure what they cost just had a brain fart as i was reading this post. i think i'll google them and see what i find. just a thought.

hey bill are you currently using the disposables?

looked online a bit and the 3m 5000 series disposable respirator is about 17 bucks, 15 if you buy them by the case, maybe cheaper i only checked a couple sites. i think the way it works instead of worrying about replacing cartridges and wearing out the actual mask, you just throw it away when it stops working and wear a new one. at that price its about what i just paid for 2 cartridges for my mask so it definitely seems to be a better way to go. i tried to listen to what mr booz was saying about them but i was also running around shooting photoagraphy for ron so i only caught bits and pieces. if bill sees this maybe he can chime in and go more into detail. i seemm to recally something about the disposables being more compliant with osha.... just thought i'd post this in case anyone's interested.
