I assume your talking about power washing cedar shakes here. 40 years is far far into the life cycle for cedar. Especially when we're talking roofs. Most of the time the fasteners used in years past weren't quite up to the standards of today. You'd see loose shakes all over as the nails rotted away. This looks like a monstrous job and a lot of rental time with a lift.
I don't know if this is something they would even consider, just been past here a few times lately and thinking ... new roof eventually or restoration. either way there is absolutely no one in the area that does anything close to restoring something like this, read some of Bill Booz posts and not sure if we should even get involved with something like this. It would be a huge undertaking that is for sure. Kim R
Roof cleaning asphalt shakes and restoring cedar shakes are two different beasts. Taking a guess about the back side area that would be a candidate for a sealing after cleaning. the cleaning, in my opinion should be either a percarb wash or a two step caustic.acid. Factoring lifts and materials, that is probably a $15,000+ job. Around here that would be a $90,000 replacement so if the shakes are in good condition and you can seal them, it would be a relatively easy sell.
Cedar shakes are not a spray and forget like asphalt shingles. Throwing on some bleach will white them out and dry them out. Good luck, it seems like a project worth pursuing.

It would look really awesome if restored. And from reading some posts about cedar cleaning it does require a different process than asphalt. I am up north right now in Mi.
Wow, that would be a great job to do, but I dont think $15000.00 would touch it. When I bid cedar shakes its always costly, very costly and most people would prefer going to a new asphalt roof verse cleaning, unless its in their Hoa that they must have a cedar shake. best of luck on this project

I think I might stop in and talk to them and inquire a little more. I re looked at again today, we are working close by, stopped and looked much closer at it. Seems to be in pretty good shape, I am going to take some pics close up and take Randy with me and get his opinion.

It would be a great job! I am not sure where that is but 40 year old shakes in my part of town are ancient. I have cleaned some pretty old stuff before and regular old white/yellow cedar shakes do not last that long. If they are 40 years old they may be Cypress. If you have to replace some here and there make sure you can get replacement shakes that are the same. Different shakes can be expensive. That looks like it is around 100 square so I would say it could be well over 15. Totally agree about the nails, although they could be copper, but take a look. Good luck! Let us know if you get it.

Watch out for the high hidden cost coming out of your pocket, I don't see any gutters and the landscape surroundings are gulf course shape. Cleaning those 40 years old shakes going to make a heck of a mess on the landscape...keep this in mind to when you bid...
(unless the gutters are hidden from the shadow.
Kudos to you for taking on this one, If you do go forward on taking this roof on, your name will surely be recognized in your area. Good luck :)
