I tell the ones who ask...

GM is a photoautotrophic bacteria. (they give me the deer in the headlights look)
It is one of the simplest and ancient organisims in existance. It is highly adaptable and hard to get rid of. In the industry we just call it "roof algae"
Here's how we get rid of it for you.

Then explain our process.

Or, like AC Lockyer used to say in the Mallard Brocures " This plant is feeding on your roof like an all you can eat buffet" yawn

I see alot of reference to black stains being an algae when they are actually a bacteria.  This forum should set the record straight? This forum is the industry standard is it not?

Because thats what the Public calls it, along with mildew.  It doesnt matter what the right term is, your selling to a person who has his own term.  Use yours all you want and the guy who tells them that He'll get the mildew off his roof will get the job.
You have to preach to your audience, not the chior.
