Hey guys.  I'm new to roof cleaning.  I'm building my rig right now.  I have been cleaning gutters for quite some time.  I was wondering if you guys are cleaning the tiger stripes off of the face of gutters and if so, what you are using.

I got to thinking about it and it would be really nice if you could just spray the gutters with apple cider sauce to remove the gutter stains.  This would be a nice add on to any roof cleaning job.

Any info would be great!

Brandon,

I use greased lightning.

I'll try krud kutter because scrubbing is a pain. You say it never eats the paint or kills the grass?

I wouldn't say never whne talking about chems cleaners, but it is by far the most useful cleaner when it comes to gutters. In my area, gutter cleaning is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you are gonna get, lol.
We seem to have so many different types of white aluminum gutters so you never  can tell until you test them. They could be annodized, baked, spray painted, clad. And from there you have all of the different types of paint and sometimes paint even comes off with simple green.

We just find that Krud Kutter is the top of the pyramid when it comes to cleaning gutters. For us it is the most likely cleaner to provide the most desireable results the fastest while being the least harmful. Especially for something you can pick up at a convenient store.

Next would be the Streak lightning that PWP sells, also great results with little drawbacks. Not to be confused with the Grease Lightening stuff that AC is talking about. I hear the Florida guys do very well with that but it is paint removal city in our neck of the woods. Most stuff is, but when the job calls for basically a gutter stripper because nothing else works then you gotta do what ya gotta do to git er done. The problem is most of that stuff says not to use it on metal and like every other surface under the sun for that matter. If thats the case then what does it clean? I guess that goes to show you haw tough it is to clean things outdoors and nothing is ever, ever absolute(except death and taxes ofcourse).

That is just one mans opinion though.

You all have been extremely helpful and I thank you.

The last question I have is, does f13 kill plants/grass?

I have never had any trouble with f13 killing anything.

I have always used Simple Green to clean the gutters.  Just do not let it dry on the gutters until you have wiped it off 1st.

As I said "wipe it off".  In Texas it dries before you could get off a ladder to spray it off and it is easier to clean dry gutters which do not dilute Simple Green.

I use a product call" ELIMINATION" from ACR supply in philadephia that's the best thing I've used.

I like it better than the "gutter lightening or F 13"

The F13 Im sure could have killed some plants in her hayday but I would an F-22 because of its stealth technology and bombing capacity if you are interested in firing up some vegitation.biggrin

Huh. I have never seen anyone climb a ladder to clean the exterior of gutters before.
Here is a pic of how we do it. Its pretty fast and a lot less fatige then moving a ladder around. It seems to me that it wold be pretty scary to have the cleaner dripping on the rugs of the ladder while in the air.

Everyone has their way to wash gutters. If it works....

The pole extends to, I forgot, but you can just do 3 stories with it. In the painting section of depo or lowes. The brush screws on to the end. The softer the brisles the better and the longer the bristles the better, can hold more soap. Usually what you would wash your car with is best. Cost is 50 if I remember right.

Yes, the pole will attach to just about any brush. You want to get a brush that the bristles are really close together so it will hold the cleaner. The pole in the pic will do 1 - 3 storys but a shorter pole would be easier to work with on a 1 story . Check this one out.

So I take it that you just dip it in the solution and brush it on the house.  That is the way it should be done.

I never had much luck with that because it dried on the gutters before you could wash it off.  That is why we hand clean gutters.  A pain the you know what.  That is why I do not push it.  How do you handle the excess run off.

Yeah if you wait too long or try and clean to much gutter at once it will dry. For the run off I just spray everything down while I rinse. It works better if you apply the chemical to the gutter in 10 to 15' setcions ( not scubing while appling) just rubbing the gutter with the brush to get the chemical on the guttter and then come back and scrub. I have seen guys dip their brush and scrub a 2' section while wasting all that chemical.

Man, this is a really helpful post. Thanks for all of the good information, guys. I need to buy one of those poles and stop procrastinating. It takes forever cleaning the exterior gutter off of a ladder!

F-13 WILL damage plants! Don't fool yourself! It's main ingredient is Potassium Hydroxide. Potassium Hydroxide will damage plants.

I have first hand experience with this. We cleaned gutters on a very large 2 story colonial house about 2 months ago. I was cleaning the gutters in the rear of the home and my employee was cleaning the gutters on the front. We use 5 gallon buckets with F-13 gutter cleaner mixed 10-1 in them. We apply with brushes and extension poles so you get quite a bit of dripping of the cleaner on the surroundings below the gutters. My guy did not rinse the azalea bushes below the gutters well enough and all of the leaves on the azaleas burnt and fell off. I had no problem with the azaleas in the back, but that was because I was very diligent in my rinsing.

Don't think it is harmless to plants because you will end up with a very unhappy customer.

Brian
