Saved by a harness and roof anchor

So up until recently Ive never really wore a harness. Ive had one, but never wore it. I always just "knew" what my limitations were. Recently, because I'm getting ready to get out from behind the wand again, Ive started wearing it to learn how to move around safely, not spray the rope, etc...

Well just 2 days ago there was a roof about a 7/12 or 8/12 that I would never in a million years worn a harness on. But for training sake I strapped it on grabbed the roof anchor and hose, and headed up the roof. I secured the roof anchor, and started spraying the roof always keeping the rope very taught. About halfway through the roof on the very top on one side, was a random loose spot of granules about 2' x 2'. Making things worse, I had just sprayed the area. As soon as my foot landed it came out from underneath me. Now without the harness I would have slid 30' down the roof then 2 stories onto the driveway. Luckily, the roof anchor and rope held and all that happened was I lost my footing, stood back up and went back to work. I didnt even think about how lucky I had gotten until I was in the truck leaving.

Wear your safety gear guys. Especially your harnesses.

Congrats on still being alive!  One big reason for me to run out an buy a harness.  Amazon sells a fall protection safety kit for $130.  However I do feel strange about using the roof anchor and putting holes in the shingles by screwing into the roof sheathing.  Am I just being paranoid?

PS new logo looks great

Scott,

Why dont you include a pic of the revolutionary new roof anchor that you used that doesnt need mounted to the roof or attached leaving holes. Oh and that I will have many of them at the Charleston, SC NCE event for sale if anyone else wants to make rooftop safety easier.

Thanks!

AC

Scott, glad your OK... Most of our work is done at the ladder (especially if we think the roof is steep enough to require a harness). But it sounds like your roof wasn't that steep. It just goes to show that accidents can happen when you least expect it.

Very lucky man, Scott. Yes, please post a pic of your roof anchor.

AC, about how much will your anchors cost? I'd like to buy one. Thanks

This is the roof anchor I was referring too. You hook your lanyard into the D ring on top, drop the pipe down into a roof vent pipe, adjust the slack and work. I was skeptical of this at first but tried it on my own house and tugged on it from every different angle and over ridges and it never budged. This thing is amazing and just saved my life. Or at least a nasty fall.

Sounds good.  I'm sure you will sellout quickly if you only have a dozen.  How can I guarantee a shot at one?

Scott do you think that anchor would keep a 270lb guy secure on a steep roof, I really find it hard to believe, what do you think?

I'm glad you are ok man. Way to be safe.

By the way can I get you anything....soda, chips? Ya know because you are practically sitting in my living room with that new logo and signature!

Just kidding buddy, I really do love it though, it is great marketing.

That anchor is a brilliant idea! Thanks for sharing and glad you had it on when you did!

Is there somewhere online one can buy one of those things? Ebay? PWP? Pressure Tek?

Nope right now they are a Professional business guide exclusive.  Maybe AC can tell us who might have them in the future??

I was skeptical of these at first too, but after doing some homework and discussing how it worked with AC I now believe them to be a valuable asset to any safety arsenal.  Finding tie points can be a real pain and cost time.

Scott, I have slipped on bad granules and the worst is it is usually to hit an exposed nail with some roofing patch tar during the initial inspection.  Can you imagine falling of a roof for part of the service that isn't even what your being paid for??  I am very glad you didn't fall.  I have always said the worst thing about falling off a roof is you will probably survive and have to live wishing you hadn't.  The permanent head and back injuries can turn a strong person into a vegetable.  I like you better as a strong business leader rather than a vegetable.  Keep up the great work brother!!

Scott, goad to see this thread. Thanks for sharing it. Nothing will help all of us to want to use all our safety equipment like a story from some one like yourself that decided to use it, and had an experience like you did, where it ended up saving you from a terrible accident.
And thanks for the pic, it will show guys what works, and I hope every roof cleaner get's one, and uses it every time they step on a roof.
I know putting on a harness is a pain, and takes time, some times makes it hard to get around, but they will save your life.

You said it goes in a " roof pipe " do you think a pvc pipe will be strong enough and not break?

Seriously it is a great safety tool. I wonder if they can put a self recoiling device at the end of it so you aren't tripping over the hose and safety rope.
Just like a vacuum cord, and go one step further add in a quick tension stop just like a seatbelt. That would maximize roof cleaning safety. It shouldn't be hard to do its just seatbelt science.
