Take your scrapes seriously

Admn - Feel free to file this post in the subject area where it needs to be!

Word of warning for summertime work!  I know its hot out there, and I've switched to shorts to lessen the heat, looks like i'm rethinking that uniform choice

Around July 30  I scraped/pricked my leg on a rose bush while attaching a rinse hose to a bib. It was less than minor, I thought nothing about it, and two days later my knee was swollen to the size of a baseball.....after another day I went to my doctor and got shot full of antibiotics. I thought it might have been a spider bite.   24 hours after my initial antibiotic injections I wet back to my doctor, as the swelling / redness had continued, and was immediately admitted to the hospital.

Turns out I had gotten infected though that tiny scrape with the MRSA bacteria on my knee. Within 7 days of the initial scrape, my leg was red and swollen from ankle to  mid-thigh. I spent 4 days in the hospital with at least 20 bags of IV antibiotics pumped into me.  Docotrs have cut out a quarter sized hole under my knee to allow the infection to drain. It  has not been a pleasant weekend to say the least!!!!!!!!!

Take your scrapes and bumps seriously, and if you get and infection, have medics  look at it IMMEDIATELY. Hospital staff told me if they had not gotten a hold of me when they had, or if I had waited three more days I may have possibly been looking at an amputation at the knee!!!! Is alarming how fast this MRSA bacteria spreads. In one afternoon alone (and this is after I''m hooked up in the hospital), I watched it grow 4 inches up my leg.

Protect yourself from scrapes and contusions out there!  I'll be out of work for a couple more days while i re-hab......you can bet I'll be back to work in jeans or cargo pants next time, and not shorts, though!

The unfortunate situation that you shared will be an eye opener to everyone who thinks about shorts, including me. I hope this serious injury does not keep you down long. God speed Ray.

Yo Ray I hope you are feeling better man, this is very ironic though. My best friend cleans roofs 1 hour from me and had a zit in his nose that hurt so bad it gave him nasty headaches and then red dots started popping up all over. MRSA. 1 Day in hospital he caught it immediately.

I have a newborn at home so my wife was all crazy when what I thought a few bug bites on my arms and knees turned very red and pretty swollen nothing crazy but I started to get them on the palms of my hands and weird sposts so went to the docs and he gave me super antibiotics and a string of blood tests and a culture for the infected knee. MRSA. although blood tests showed I was healthier than a horse for having infection.

I never once felt a drop of sickness but my buddy was seriously ill.

Just very odd. If anyone else has these symptoms or gets sick like this tell us because it can't be a coincidence.

I wash out my gloves every day before and after and I am really good about it. I asked doc about killing all of the good bacteria on my skin from being too clean (aka sprayed with sauce) and he said not showing anysigns of that because skin has good color and isn't dry or crackly and stuff.

Maybe its roof cleaning MRSA and we get from the same chem supplier. jk

Ray, I must tell my wife something like that everyday and boom it happens. I feel like Al Bundy.

Im always like "look babe, we don't need to put a friggin coat on the kid it's 90 out, be a man huh hun------All of the sudden we are hit by a cold blast and thunderstorm.

or
Should I grab this or should I grab that......Bla bla bla bla bla bla......Yes hun, just grab it, don't ever ask me anything again just so you can yell at me for not telling you yes because I was trying to be nice. (but ofcourse we don't say that we just strap the SUV to our back and drag our way through the food store. Yes hun.....no hun.

It just doesn't matter what we say they some how have a power to make the opposite happen. And most of the stuff she doesn't understand because we are men.

@ swee****erfish

I wonder whether the rose bush had the bacteria on it or if you later happened to be exposed to MRSA and the scrape let it in. Either way, that is gnarly! Glad you caught it in time!

I'm thinking I might toss a pack of alchohol wipes in the glove box. Wouldn't be a bad idea to have around for random scrapes.
