There's no law that Im aware of that keeps you from taping it to the mailbox. You just cant place it INSIDE. I could be wrong about that but Im pretty sure thats accurate.
Some people think knocking on doors is obnoxious. Its all relative.

Scott I googled the law about the Mail boxes and it said the mail box is government property inside and outside, so no you cant touch it??????

here is a copy of the law that I cut and pasted. I have not come accross any other laws saying otherwise. This law does not make any references about penalties when ads are placed outside the mailbox or on the post, which many small business and local organizations do to save some money. To each his own. If you feel comfortable doing it, then do it. If your conscience says no, then pay the postage and sleep well at night.
I find that most homewoners are fine with this method of advertising, including me. I am constantly finding flyers outside my mailbox. it's no different from the junk mail inside my mailbox. I keep what I want and throw away the rest. There is always somene out there that will complain. If they do, appologize and skip them in the future.
The U.S. Code Online via GPO Access [wais.access.gpo.gov] [Laws in effect as of January 24, 2002] [Document not affected by Public Laws enacted between January 24, 2002 and December 19, 2002] [CITE: 18USC1725]
TITLE 18--CRIMES AND CRIMINAL PROCEDURE
PART I--CRIMES
CHAPTER 83--POSTAL SERVICE
Sec. 1725. Postage unpaid on deposited mail matter
Whoever knowingly and willfully deposits any mailable matter such as statements of accounts, circulars, sale bills, or other like matter, on which no postage has been paid, in any letter box established, approved, or accepted by the Postal Service for the receipt or delivery of mail matter on any mail route with intent to avoid payment of lawful postage thereon, shall for each such offense be fined under this title.
Right after high school I worked for Domino's Pizza and we got to make overtime on our days off by passing out doorhangers.
We were told to not hang them from the mail boxes, don't put them on or in the mail boxes because some employees hanged some doorhangers from the mailboxes and a postal carrier came by the store and told the manager that he was going to inform his superiors and they would get a fine of about $500 and have to pay postage for each piece but they round it up to city blocks, not just a few houses.
After all that nobody touched the mailboxes and I understand why, I would not want to get a fine or lose my job for doing something like that.
I see it happening but I guess people are not complaining or the stuff is put out after the mailman has done his route so he will not see them but I would not take the chance.
I would hang the door hanger from the door or put it on the porch.
If it was a flyer or postcard then I would do the same or try to leave it where they would see it when coming home but not touching the mailbox.

just talked to New Jersey Post Office about sticking flyers on the outside of mailboxes, and they said, " technically it is illegal and that the postman could collect all items stuck to mailboxes and bring them to the office and you could be charge postage for all!
I don't think I will be doing that, and it seems something that easy just don't pay off anyway.
I used to go to a Biker Gathering every week. I saw this huge black biker, who turned out to be the Federal Prosecutor for Tampa ! I asked him IF he would really prosecute someone for hanging a flyer ON a Mailbox ? He told me if one of his Postal Inspectors ever brought him a case like that he would have them fired on the spot! BUT, he said they prosecute people all the time for going into a mailbox!
How about the 50 other places to put the flyer other than the mailbox? I put the flyer on or near the doormat. I bend the corner up slightly so theyre not scraping the flyer off the cement. Then I'll drop on a magnet for a little wait. If they got a little ceramic frog or duck closeby, I will help myself to use it as a paper weight.

I quite like that idea of holding it down with a magnet. Thanks for that.
There are railings, doormats, sometimes little chairs, tables, or benches. OK Clyde, maybe not quite 50. Does it really need to be taped to the mailbox? or taped at all? I really wouldnt want stuff taped to my property. But I do have a good friend who does very well painting addresses on curbs. He tapes an alert flyer "If there was an emegency, could the ambulance, FD, or PD find you in time?". He gets $25 for one side and $35 for both. Cheap Walmart spray paint.
Vista print works. Their software is pretty easy for you to design yourself. Theyre not the cheapest. I make my own flyers. I buy my pc ink dirt cheap on Ebay at like an 80% discount. So I print myself. Here's a glance at my flyer.
