Tanks: Advantage of Horizontal Leg Tank vs Square Tank

Something to think about:

Although horizontal leg tanks are expensive, they offer a bit of a baffle effect at the molded legs.  Baffles help break up the sloshing back and forth of the liquid in the tank.  The horizontal leg tanks are stable and easy to strap down with vinyl coated stainless cable and aluminum crimps, metal tank straps, pipes or bands.

Square tanks take up much less space than other styles but are more difficult to secure.

We always recommend to buy your tanks locally instead of shipping.  Call the company personally and ask if that is their best price.  Ask if they provide any sort of discount such as a miltary discount.

Ask for the polypropylene bulkhead (if you need it) with VITON compression seals instead of the standard buna or EPDM.  (If you have one that is leaking, either replace the seal with VITON or replace the entire bulkhead.

Should you get lucky and find a used tank, make sure it was not used for fertilizers or permeating organic based chemicals.  Do not use fiberglass tanks.  Totes, (the big square tanks with the metals cages) are great and offer a tremendous amount of storage but have several types of bulkhead and valve assemblies at the bottom which are sometime quite challenging to deal with.  You may use them, convert them or plug them.  You may plug them with sch 40 or sch 80 plugs and either pipe dope, liquid teflon or threadlock.

That is good info Lori.

I agree, the square or rectangular tanks are hard to secure because most of the ones I have seen don't have stress relief built into them so when you use metal bands, cables or ratchet straps it causes stress on the corners which will make the material crack.

The leg tanks have molded in areas for securing them which are designed for the metal bands but I have used thick cables and ratchet straps before. The sun does a number on the straps over time so check them every few months or so if you go that route.

Those square tote tanks can have all kinds of threads on them. I got a 275 gallon tote that has the thin metal cage around it with the plastic bottom that looks kind of like a pallet. The threads on the outlet of the ball valve is either european or metric or something else but it is not regular pipe thread and using the outer cap, none of the local suppliers could get me a fitting or matching cap so I could change out the valve or modify it.

I wanted to put a regular ball valve so I could connect a hose and run it to a small transfer pump to fill other tanks when on remote areas when I had to bring in water. I ended up using the 5gpm Delavan to transfer water by pulling out of the top of the tote. I had no problem using the Delavan and to keep the other tank from over flowing, I used the Hudson Valve and everything worked great on that 2 day job.

Before you get a tote, if you plan on using the bottom fittings, make sure that they are regular pipe thread or can get adapters before you buy it because those totes come from all around the world and have all kings of fittings on the bottom of them.

Thanks Lori.
