I do all the local fairs in the area and I am wanting to push the roof cleaning aspect of the business.  I was wanting to give them a free demonstration -- possibly a 5 x 5 -- done near the gutter so it is in a visible spot.  I would like to do it there so they can easily see the outcome and will make them think more seriously about getting the entire roof done.  I would like to know if I should have them sign some kind of waiver so I am not held liable to complete the entire roof for free.

Hi Tyrone, please fill out your signature and Bio, welcome to the board. We do few demonstrations and do not have such a waiver, but it sounds like a good idea if your doing demos all the time. It may make your potential customer hesitant so you would have to make it simple.

Getting them to sign "something" isn't a bad idea. I would not call it a waiver though... that sounds to legalistic and may scare them off. I would have a nice standard form drawn up ..... call it a "disclaimer" or maybe even an "authorization" for your work. In the verbiage just say that you and the customer discussed the fact that the area in which you perform your demo will be clean and noticeably different from the rest of the roof and that since you performed the demo as a free service that you would not be responsible to clean the rest of the roof unless the customer paid $xxx for the full service. A document like this may protect you legally, but keep in mind that there will always be some customers that will still complain and even if they signed your disclaimer, they wont stop until you take care of their roof (for free).

I do think demos are a great marketing tool though.
