$199.00 is ok if its a 1000 sq ft house. Id see if he is doing bait and switch. Advertising a price without a disclaimer of price vs. size.
example...
Roof Cleaning $199.00 Prices based on 1,000 sq. ft. home, shingle roof, 412 pitch, lightly stained.
If he doesnt do that kind of verbage on his advertising, copy the ad and send it to the Dept of Ag, Consumer Relations Dept. They will launch an investigation.
I searched home roof cleaning...there is a local florida guy advertising $199....ouch
LOL, we have about 3 to 5 of them advertising roofs 99 dollars, d/ways 30 dollars, houses 75 dollars here in Tampa. They advertise on Craigslist, or in the Flyer.
They are simply bait and switch artists, the 99 dollar roof is for a 1 car garage. NO one is cleaning roofs in Tampa for 99 dollars, or doing d/ways for 30 bucks either.
I can PM anyone a list of guys in Sun City who are doing 2k+ roofs for under 100 bucks. 750-1000 sqft driveways for $50.00 And entire 2400+ sqft houses for $100-150.
Now, they are either PW them or have a pump sprayer with Clorox pro Outdoor and water.
I run into them every week.
I have a hard time selling our method at $.10 a sqft.

Sun City center is just a bunch of cheap old "farts" people anyhow. Get the Heck out of there! Also it is not our process that makes us more expensive. You need to sell more than just the process because everyone will lie and say they do it just like _______. fill in the blank. You need to sell insurance, workers comp, refrences, warranty etc. Your customers need to be scared as all get out to let any hillbilly on thier roof because of the potential liability of falling off the roof. Take pictures of your competitions screw ups. Plant damages, paint damages, letters from upset customers, etc. If I had a trunk slammer prostituting my area with $100.00 roof cleanings I would have 4 pages in my sales book dedicated to him. Pictures of him in his cut offs, cleaning a roof with no safety equip, the beer in his pich up bed, a criminal background check, his plant damages, pissed off customers, etc.
We even cooperated with workers comp compliance once and set up a sting at a apartment complex for one of our competitors that was photoshopping workers comp certs. HE WENT TO JAIL! Guy stole thousands of dollars of work from us and it was justice to see him go down for his dishonesty!
How serious are you about kicking these amatures out of your hood:)
***This is where Chris will chime in and talk about the old Mallard days and how we out sold the biscuts out of everyone........and how a few companies who rose up to the standard benifited from the aftermath.***
I dont do residential anymore so I dont mind letting a few tips slip out.
I know I should get out of Sun City, but I don't know where to set up really. There are a few RCIA guys around here. But I do need to make money.
The round table should give me more ideas.

Some people want a Mercedes, some want a Kia in Sun City Center. We have no problem getting a fair price for our roof cleaning services anywhere. Sun City is no exception. If you allow the Kia salesman to convince the roof cleaning customer he is a Mercedes, or just as good as one, it turns into a roof cleaning price war.
Listen to what AC Says, him and I have both been battling low priced wanna be roof cleaners for almost 20 years, and we are still here! I just sold a deal today in Ruskin, the guy told me my "competitor" was lower priced. I said "so what" ?
He is a retired attorney, so I told him the senior partner in a law firm always costs more then a kid out of law school, he laughed, and we scheduled him as well as another repeat customer in Sun City for next week, weather permitting.
Thats one thing nice about cleaning roofs in sun city, most residents are retired, always home, and easy to schedule. Plus, we like eating Ribs at the Sonny's BBQ down there!
I need to get all my stuff together and go in there again under our new name (we are dividing the company) head held high and blow them away.
I bet we could both clean houses for the next 2 weeks on Wolf Laurel alone the roofs are so dirty. There is plenty of work there. But so many of them want it for so little. I literally had someone tell me they were going to report me for trying to steal from "old people" because I quoted $500 for a 3,200 sqft red tile on Platinum. I thought I was giving it away, lol.
I was never that good at sales. I'm okay when they call me, but telling them they need me is harder for me. (cold calls)
Hoping to learn more at the round table

I'm right here with you Matthew. Though I've never had anyone tell me I was ripping them off I almost get the feeling that that's what they are thinking over the phone. The problem right now seems to be that there are SOOOO many guys armed with air pumps and Delevans that its almost impossible to compete with them cause they are giving the cleanings away. Most all of them don't use ground guys, cover sensitive plants, have no ins and above all, they just don't care as long as they are bringing home $100.00-$200.00 in cash at the end of the day.
I try to educate my customers as much as possible on the benefits of using a professional company but many just care about the bottom line.
Sometimes I think we should have a Round Table for our customers to educate them about the difference between us and these hacks. I do pretty well at closing some of these people and making them realize the difference but it is seems like a battle every time the phone rings. They just don't seem to realize that we are trying to run a business and that this is not just a hobby for us.

Ditto Larry, it's like as soon as one goes out of business three more pop up. We had a lock down on the roof cleaning a couple years ago and charged .75 a sq. ft. for low pressure roof cleaning before we used the proper methods and it was actually easier to sell that then!!

It is only going to get worse! Wanna go into the Roof Cleaning Equipment business with me Bill ? I hear they are cleaning up ......
well 99 out of 100 roofs in our area are still infested.
Until that drops below 30% I assume we just need more education on the customers part

I hate to say it but these forums are why its getting worse. The intentions are good, trying to educate and teach the proper methods but we are really doing here is cutting our own throats....
It is hard for me to complain because I would have been out of business if I had not found PWI and learned the proper method. Unfortunately this forum is soooooooo easily found, just in the last 3 months ive had 12 new roof cleaners pop up, and thats just the ones I can find. Ive had 2 guys walk up to me and say "hey! are you Scott??? Ive been following your posts on RCIA!!!" Almost makes my blood boil.
