Do any of you use current map info to price your roofs?

I figured with the local CAD system and Google maps as well as National Geo. maps you could get pretty close to a price without leaving your seat.

Just throwing it out there.smile

I'm not sure how practical that is, but I'm going to look into it.
I think it would be useful for certain applications.

My wheels are spinning.

The National geographic maps allow me to zoom right on top of homes around here, if you have alot of trees, then I just go to the local CAD and put address info and get the square foot of a home.

The Google maps have the sidewalk view.

There is one neighborhood in town that I've been using google "street view"  to give estimates.  Its a newer neighborhood, I know there are not a lot of "homeowner add-ons" such as porches, decks, etc, as the HOA won't allow it.  There are only about 7 basic styles of houses in the whole neighborhood, and I've washed all of them, so with just a picture I can be pretty sure of what I'm getting into.  It is the ONLY neighborhood here that I feel comfortable doing that with.

More often than not, when I have given an estimate without looking at the property, I've gotten burned.

they are all good tools but what really sells the job for me is to meet the customer face to face and earn thier trust and then close the sale.

We price out and sell 90% of them from Bing maps...biggrin

Considering the time it takes you to drive there... sit down and sell the job... and get back... you might of have killed 2 hours, plus the gas you used to get there. It is much easier just to look it up and give them a price.

Your not selling them a $12,000 tear off, just a $450.00  + or -  roof cleaning job, it takes you longer to sell it then it does to shoot it. Do the math... confuse

We do tell them if we are unable to scope out the house because of trees or for whatever reason then we will need to do a drive by to get a better look, and we always travel loaded ready for the money shot wink

Nothing beats a face to face.
But... If I get a call from a large job wanting a "ballpark" and there 45 min to an hour away, it would be nice to check it out before I drive that far.

There are always exceptions to the rules however most of our prices are close we just ask them a few simple questions .... wink

What style of house do you have.
How many Sq feet.
Do you have any trees around your house.
Is the infected area green moss or black streaks.

Then we peek at the house online.... biggrin ...Bam!

I personally have never used maps to quote jobs, however I am always up for new methods of estimation.  I think I will always like face to face time with the customers though because then they can get an idea of your professionalism and courtesy and that in itself is a strong selling point.  Also, you can get an idea of the neighborhood they live in and see if there is other potential work there.

Another good thing to have is a book with several pages of your work within it.  You can create a binded book with photos, text, etc. for a great price.  You can give this book to the homeowner to look at so they can see some examples of your work while you are performing the estimate because personally I'd rather have the HO reading some valuable material as opposed to following me around the property while I perform the estimate.

Bob,

I really like your website!  Very informative, good layout and easy to read!  I wanted to ask if those pics of the attic roof were the caused of roof algae??

Just about every Roof Cleaning estimate we give is done over the phone. I live in Pinellas County Florida where it sometimes takes 45-1hr to travel from one town to the next. lots of traffic. My vehicle is also a lease with a 60k mileage limit before having to pay .15per mile and gas prices will eat you alive.

I began doing all my estimates over the phone approx 2yrs ago and have had great success. I use the local property appraiser web sites to get the sq ft of the home and then check on Bing and google satellite maps to see the home itself. Actually most every customer understands the reasoning behind this method and they actually like not having to be inconvenienced by having to plan time into their already busy schedule to meet with you.

Most all estimates are done in the early evening hours when the customer has time to go over the final details and you can explain your procedure. There are SOME however that want/need special in person attention for other types of Pressure Washing jobs that we will go out to look at in person but for the most part this seems to work for both parties involved.

Well Larry if you ever get a few over my way just let me know...
I'll go quote them for you biggrin
No since in you having to cross a bridge, yeah?

Seriously, I know a lot of you guys travel for jobs and I think this would work out great for you. We purposely stay in a relatively small area so for us its not necessary.
I still think I'm going to try it though.
