The type that Lori is talking about can be purchased just about any place that sells well pumps and accessories for underground well for potable water.
The 1/4 holes will stop some of the big stuff but not the sludgey stuff.
I tried a specialty coffee filter once, it worked okay but made the pump work harder so I 86'ed it.
The type she's talking about uses slots not holes. You could make one yourself with a ban saw, or perhaps a mounted Dremel tool but.... Buying one would be way easier.
Currently I must admit to going basically filterless. I know where I get my SH from and my system is sealed tight except for the 2 minutes it takes to add the new SH from my supplier. If I was using the type of system most do where I have the lid off the top all day while I pump I might be more concerned, but I don't. My set up is completely sealed.
Only suggestions I have that might be helpful is to go to your local pool supplier and look around. Maybe something there can be modified to fit your needs.

10-4, I will check with a local pool company, checked Lowe's and HD and even Ace Hardware, and nothing, I might check Tractor Supply.

$10.95 at home depot. In the irrigation section....its a pvc pipe with what looks like slits made by a band saw. Its called a well point and comes in 1 1/4 inch which is what i use.
I bought mine and also picked up a "T" and 2 caps..I cut mine in half put a "T" in it and then capped it. Works Great!!
