I am going to add roof cleaning to my pressurewashing business. My question on the Delavan pump is as follows.
1. When you pull the trigger on the polygun to start your cleaning process. Do you pull the trigger once and try to cover the most section of the roof as you possible can or do you " squeeze the trigger like your spray painting a car".
I know this maybe a idiot question and I would not ask but I have 0 experince with the demand pump and do not want to put any undue pressure on the pump that would cause it to malfuction.
2. Once we start the pump to flowing the "juice", Will it harm the pump in any way to have it run say for 5-10 minutes if the roof is a walkable one?
I know once I get on my first roof and I will figure it out. Just trying to Process the cleaning in my head first so that I have a game plan.
The mix will flow when you squeeze and continue to flow until you release. I have also had no problems with the pump running over long periods of time. Just be sure when you mount the pump it will have good airflow around it.... Like if you mount it in a box don't run it with the lid closed, open it up. I have washed everything from roofs to "soft washing" entire houses with a delavan and never had an issue.
Its kinda like watering the grass. As long as you're not over spraying off the roof all the time you should be able to to just hit the gun and do most of the section. If you're on/off with the gun it could start messing with the pump. If you have experience with pressure washing you should be able to keep the pump going and cover a good section of the roof.
Hydro and Halbolt, thanks for the info. I did a search today and found more info on the spraying process for newbies.
I have the info that was needed now. Thanks guys.
I am like a kid in a candy store with anticipation. I have 2 jobs at this time lined up. Just running every thing thru my head, before I start so that I can become on of the VETS....
I just put mine Fatboy together and I am tweaking the design of the pvc filter in the tank. Ill try to shoot a vid sometime tomorrow. I also want to note that it is an awsome pump. I used it on my roof with water to get to know it better. I set up the wand with a ball valve and it works good like that. I had little runoff on the roof, the flow is good and you can easily "mist" a roof with little runoff. My roof will be the guinea pig if it doesnt rain. My first Non pressure roof cleaning in Brownsville TX.

El Flo Jo, Please make a video when you can. I would like to see your process. I too played with my Delavan Kit 5850, i purchased from Bob at pressuretek, last friday.
I used water also to see if I had the psi, distance and gpm.that comes from the pump.
One thing I did was test the gpm of the pump. I ran the pump for exactly one minute and I only filled the bucket up to 3.5 gallons. I was thinking it should have been 5 gallons in the bucket.
Then I thought about there was still water in the 200 ft hose and Bob informed me that my new battery was not fully charged. Which I fully charged last week. So I will test the gpm again this weekend
So I cut the hose down to 150ft. Figuring I should be able to reach back, front, rear and side of most home with at least 150 Ft. Plus I will have 50 extra that I can mend in if needed.
I also purchased my 91% ISO from Walmart last evening and the Ammonynx lo from Lori at pwp. I am getting ready to put the Apple sauce mixture together to do my own home first.
Will see how it goes.
Thanks everyone for your help.

I dont wanna mix up more than i have to,so i just use SH and Hangtight. Did my own roof with hems and was blown away. I have 2 big roofs to do.(high dollar homes 4k+sf) so i have to get practice. I dont like looking like a newbie on the job. my sister is replacing her roof that is 8 yrs old and i am going to play on it in the am. But i will run out of SH real soon and cant get it in for another week .5

Hey Jay, you also have to remember that the 5gpm rating is when the outlet side is open. The longer your hose and the higher you are, the less gpm it will actually push. the 5850 will do about 3.5-4gpm and the fatboy will do about 5-6.
Thats is exactly what I was thinking. Just so much to factor in with this new endeavor. I am learning as much as I can while I get everything ready for this weekend.
Will be ordering my tank today from NTO and then the " Let It Rain$$$$$$".
Scott makes a good point, the pumps are rated that way so you know what they can do but when you add 100's feet of hose, go up in elevation, the charge of the battery, size of battery cables, size orifice of spray nozzle, etc.... it all adds up in how many gpm's you will see on the roof through the hose.
I use a 5gpm Delavan for just transferring chemicals, I use 1/2" hose on the inlet and outlet and I get a good flow rate but when I tried using the hose on my reel (220' of 1/2") the flow slowed down a lot so the further you have to pump the less gpm's you will see.
Remember, these are only little 12 volt pumps with very little power and pressure so don't expect flow and pressure like on pressure washers where you can run 100's of feet of pressure hose and you don't really see a problem in the flow or pressure because you have thousands of psi but with the Delavan you only have less than 65 on most of them so the more hose you have, the less flow in gpm's you will see at the nozzle.

here is a trick you guys can use for you battery power you can get two deep cycle batteries and run them paralel by that i meen + to +. and - to - and hook your pump up as nomal this will deliver the same 12 volt power but it will last alot longer also I like to use 0/1 welding lead wire for my battery wires (I build lowriders and we use 8 or more batteries so I have found out what wire works good to transfer power). also what is IOS and what dose it do I have been looking trying not to ask but sofar i have not found any thing other then people use it in the mix. thanks

Scott, you are right on the money. Hose diameter, swivels, hose reels, guns & fittings will also effect the final output as well.
