Cougar Paws have great traction on roofs, BUT only if they are dry...

I have not tried the cougar paws or the shoes for crews, hard to find shoes in my size, 11eee or 11eeee depending on the manufacturer.

I just use my old tennis shoes and they grab good, no problem and not any damage on the shingles, I guess if you know how to walk on them they won't get damaged, been walking on roofs for over 30 years and never damaged a shingle yet.

I use the Plyovic hose but also have the Kuritec hose and both have the special anti-granule-disturbing coating so they glide over the shingles almost effortlessly.

I tried my black rubber boots but they were too stiff and I could not walk that good and did not feel safe on the roof when wearing them so I put the tennis shoes back on. Soft soles are great on asphalt shingles, they grab good and don't damage the shingles if you are walking carefully and not being careless.

Tiles are another story, I will not go on tiles because I am too big. hahahahaha

All in good fun. I agree that we should not be walking on many roofs at all, but we have priced out  some jobs that I will have no choice at all but to walk them due to the height and construction of the roof.

Your feet probably hurt, by the way, because of the ladder. Try focusing on flexing your calves as you climb each rung of the ladder and use the balls of your feet when you step. This will get your calves sore too but in a good way.

Also if you feet are hurtin' from the ladder that means you have been doing a lot of roof cleaning so I'm sure your wallet is feeling fine.

And seriously don't you watch TV? Are you gellin? If your feet hurt you should be gellin! So go get some Dr.Scholl's.

It doesn't matter what type of hose you use or shoes, walking on shingles or dragging a hose on shingles will cause the granulars to loosen and fall off.

Like I said, if you don't know how to walk on roofs or move the hose properly then I guess it might be possible that you might weaken some granules if you are stomping around and dragging the hose around non-properly.

Just about anything is possible. There might be some granules that are already weak or released when you walk on them and that might make you think that you are releasing them, or you are just not walking on the shingles properly, anyway, the quality of your work will reflect how long the roof stays clean or lasts. It is ok if you don't know how to walk on roofs right now, none of us knew when we first started walking on roofs. It is ok, you can learn just like most of us have.

I heard Vagasil is making a line of shoes now.....maybe try those. wink.gif

Seriously, when I have to climb something with a pitch I usually put on my Georgia Boots, on a metal roof I wear tennis shoes. On low to moderate pitch roofs I just wear my black or white rubber washing boots.

Also, on a related note, what about blowing the roof off? Am I assuming you guys are walking the roof to at least blow it and then spraying from the ground or a ladder?

In Tallahassee its almost impossible to find a roof without a build-up of leaves.

Most Home owners prefer that you don't walk on their roofs.  You can do it your way and we will keep doing it the professional way.  Maybe get a bigger system than you too can shoot a whole roof from the gutter line or the ground.

There are a lot of different angles that need to be sprayed that you cannot get perfectly when shooting from the roof edge like when you have dormers (dog houses), multi level connecting roofs on the main roof (major pita with these multi level roofs that connect at different heights and different levels) and when you have the different pitch roofs connecting together.

Walking a roof will give you the best coverage, use less chemicals and you will be doing a more thorough job.

I wish I could shoot from the roof edge on every roof I do but even with the very low pitch roofs, walking them will be faster as you are not waiting for the chemicals to run down and see what you need to hit that did not get covered with the runoff from the higher areas.

The Bandit roller pump will shoot 40'-50' no problem but I am in the 4th windiest city in Texas and the wind is always blowing and that does carry the mix away when you are trying to spray from far away. I wish I could just hose the whole roof down and not worry about runoff but here most houses don't have rain gutters on them. Most of the homeowners that I talk to mention that they don't want to clean out the gutters 2 or 3 times a year with all the leaves that get stuck in them and they don't want to get up on the roof to inspect the gutters (lots of trees or bushes that cover the gutters on a lot of houses that make cleaning the gutters a pita) so I can see their point.

Really????
I have a John Blue and still have to walk roofs from time to time. With several hundred roofs under my belt I have never had granule loss problems, broke a shingle nor had a customer question the need to walk their roof.

There is a trick to keeping hose from dragging a roof.I know Chris Tucker knows it and used to teach it.Bring enough hose on the roof before you start spraying.

This is a house we did this week.  It is tall and big and we did it all from ladders. It was not an easy home but it was to dangerous to walk and the home owner didn't want us on the roof because he heard it damages the shingles.  He's correct.

B.S how did the shingles get on there? Really.. you guys can walk the shingle roofs , but you have to know how, the only issue is walking them on really hot days, can cause scar marks. But damage them , uh NO! But to each his own

I use tennis shoes too but the they suck when you are a ground guy. I switch to rubber shoes then to keep my feet dry.

I really dont have that problem. If I am on the ladder my point of spray is above the gutter line and you wont hit the siding, if I am on the roof, same point....but if you do hit the siding, have your ground guy shoot it with the hose and upsell for a house wash.
If you happen to be talking about a two part roof where one floor is elevated, this is where I will change to my wide spray pattern and walk the roof up "edging" up next to the siding, and then come down the other side. I get back on the ladder and shoot the rest with a "0" and call it done.
You have to think about the action of the liquid you are shooting...and react accordingly.

Not being a smarty but think before you shoot......
