Toledo Roof Cleaning Removes Moss With No Problem
Permalink

We have been getting a lot of homes with heavy moss. We use our normal solution and it dies instantly.  We have a home that was built in 1929 and has the original roof on it.  I think it's slate but I can't tell.  I was thinking about using copper sulphate on it but am going to stick with SHC.  I hear these roofs are very brittle.  Anybody have any idea if the ladder standoffs will crack the slate?

Hey Doug, I've done a handful slate roofs over the years. I never had an issue with cracking slate from the ladder standoff. However, don't be surprised when you get up there up close you'll see pieces of slate scaling off. If you've ever done any old slate patios you'll know what I mean. Point being, just make the customer aware that there could be loose slate up there and it is pre-existing.

Aside from that, when I do slate roofs, I use a typical roof mix with the addition of Sodium Hydroxide. Just seems to give the mix some serious punch and "smokes" the moss.

If there are any copper gutters or anything else copper, be very careful when using hydroxide,...it will turn copper black instantly.

Are you going to be rinsing these to a finished roof, or allowing time to remove it? either way, when the moss is removed don't be surprised if you have to make another application or 2 to remove the normal discoloration that was under the moss and dirt. Just seems to go that way.

Jeff

Hey Jeff Thanks for the info.  I will probably stay away from the hydroxide though.  If you look in the middle of the roof that vent is all copper and I wouldn't be surprised to see more up there.  We are not going to rinse.  Just let it die and mother nature should take care of it for us.  It's a tall on though.  Thanks for the info.  I never heard of a roof being original on a 1929 home.

Well, It turns out this is not a slate roof.  It is an asbestos roof.  Just talked to the new home owner and she tells me that the roof is Abestos.  She said asbestos roofs are lifetime roofs.  This one was built in 1929 and does not leak or has it ever.  Anyone ever cleaned one?  Will our solution damage it in anyway?  Copper Sulphate or SHC?  I can get copper sulphate in a granular form for ponds.

Wholely Toledo,

We cleaned a asbestos roof in Little Rock that was original roof circa 1920's. It had moss, lichen, algae, etc.
Told client it would take three trip applications of chemical then rinse & lotsa ground work.
It came out like new... beautiful!
Client was Very Happy and we were too $$$

Slate roofs last forever, especially with the right conditionsI have done work on homes where the roof has been much older than that, I have never cleaned a slate roof personally though.
Great info Jeff, I will put that one down in my arsenal.

Chris, what was your mix for the asbestos roof?

Ray, you mentioned copper gutters.  Have you ever cleaned them?  If so, what did you use?

From experience with asbestos shingles, the mix will not hurt the asbestos. They do last a long time, I did one last year that was paper thin,....and very brittle,....but customer said it didn't leak. Here again though, make the customer aware that there could be loose pieces and even broken corners here and there. So yes, be careful with ladder placement on asbestos. The other thing about asbestos is it will absorb the mix as soon as it hits,...seems to use more compared to a comparable sized shingle roof.

There are still quite a few asbestos sided homes in my area, they hold paint really well. They have kind of a scalloped appearance.
