Hey Guys,
New to the roof cleaning business, getting the final touches done to my rig this week.  Been reading up on several searches on the forum.  Thanks for all the great information on rig set-up, sauce mixes and techniques.  How serious is it if you get the sauce on your skin?  Read many threads and viewed many pics and we see many guys wearing shorts and t shirts with sneakers,  Is this the best clothing or should protective clothing be worn?

I have posted this picture before, but it is always worth posting again.

I use forearm length rubber gloves, long sleeve shirts, long pants, hat, glasses and respirator. The clothing really helps with the indescriminate mist or splash, but the clothing will not help you if you get it wet. In fact, the wet clothing against your skin will cause even more damage. I now keep a change of clothing with me at all times and extra pairs of gloves.

As far as shoes go, I wear Treadsafe shoes from Walmart. They are restaurant kitchen shoes that are oil, grease, and slip resistant. They have great traction with their sole design and are great when you want to walk on a roof. Unfortunately they are not waterproof. I also keep an extra pair of them in my truck.

When I do concrete cleaning or pressure washing, I use knee high rubber boots.

This picture I'm posting was caused by a small leak in my nozzle that I was unaware of. The chemical was dripping down my rubber glove and making my long sleeve shirt wet right at the edge of the glove. It was a very hot day and I was sweating profusely. I didn't realize my arm was getting wet until it really started to burn. I guess the sweating really opened up my pores and by the time I realized what was happening, it was too late. I washed the area immediately with Dawn and water and rinsed for almost 15 minutes. This was the result. I still have redness in that spot and it is almost 7 months later. You definitely have to respect the chemicals.

All i got from the video was it was a soft wash roof cleaning method which is what we all use i didn't know it was for something that was applied over a month ago. Does it say that in the video any where? i may have missed it. i thought all the other pictures of before and after came out well so i thought he was using the same method most of us are.

Hello all!I've been wanting to get into the roof cleaning biz.I want to use a biodegradeable type chemical and have looked at Spray nForget,Roof Be Clean, and Roof-Reviver.I DEF. don't want to waste my money, customer's time, nor mine on a product that don't work or have to come back every 6mths!Now I see here, that it seems to be better to make your own.Is this true?I'm also wanting one that I can rinse off at least within a day of appying the cleaner. Is there anyone with a recipe to share and not be worried about it killing plants or animals?BTW,anyone that's used any of the before-mentioned products,I'd love to get some feedbacks on your experience with them before I buy. Thanks to all the info and help you can provide

Welcome to RCIA my friend!
Listen to what Toledo Roof Cleaning Said.
That is a plant living on your roof, it must be Killed.
Or, it will come right back, like cutting a weed w/o killing it's roots!
Read my friend, use the search, this is the largest amount of roof cleaning knowledge ever assembled, in one place.

I had never thought of it as a plant living on your roof either (i dont know why....what else is algae?  lol).  Gives me a little more insight when talking to customers and answering their questions.

Actually Zeke, Blue green algae is of the phylum cynabacteria, and of the kingdom bacteria. But we still call it a plant. There is a thread around here somewhere with the info on it from some web research another and I pulled. Algae is any plant-like material that lacks visible roots and leaves, so there are actually lots of very different things grouped into this category.

shingles themselves are biodegradable. Words are cheap for the buyer in this business.

Waste of money, unless you want to use pressure on the roof.

If it isn't strong enough to kill a plant around a house, then it ain't strong enough to kill the algae(plant) on the roof.

I have tried evrything and in the middle of trying everything always came back to this site again and agian and then finally joined up and RCIA is the best. It may cost you a lot of money to do it this way, but if you want to build a house you can't do it with a swiss army knife even though it is advertised to do everything.

I believe it is the product roof reviver that you can view a video on youtube. If you view the videos, you will notice a scene where the customer says how great his roof came out.....if you look its still has black algae all over it, I can't believe they put it out there like that. I will try to find the video and post it.

I just saw their add and noticed the same thing.  Like the medicine men of the late 19th century.  Sometimes simple is better.  Ive tried the QSE myself, it seemed to be a waste.

One thing I dont think was mentioned was the cost. I know one of the products mentioned costs about $20 per gallon, dilutes to 5 gallons.... how much of this stuff can you use before losing money on the job? Not much. I think the only ones buying these products are Do-it-yourself'ers. They will end up paying $200, applying with a pump up sprayer, spending all day doing it..... on the roof.... and then still end up with un-professional results. It's just not worth it.

If algae blows from place to place wouldsnt it be a good way to sale to the neighbors by saying if you dont kill it on all surfaces it would come back sooner?>?  give me your thoughts on this?

This has a lot of good info in it. Never thought of the living plant and not being able to kill it. I have that right on my website and adds. Go figure. LOL that’s why I like this form so much. One person will say or ask something and the ideas come pouring out. Great stuff.
