If you run a regulator to keep your delavan from starting and stopping all of the time…or even if you don’t……I would think that heat is your enemy …..right,
Can you throw a bag of ice on top of you delavan to keep it cool……..maybe even install your pump in a cooler……..
This could be the dumbest question you guys have ever heard….please don’t laugh ……….
The heat you are fighting is generated internally in the windings of the motor. It comes from the frequent starting and stopping of the motor. There is an excessive surge of current when you first turn the motor on and that is what generates the heat.
If you read the directions of any industrial motor that is used in hydraulic operations, they tell you that you must wait at least 2 seconds betweeen the stopping and starting again of the electric motor. Failure to do so will cause permanent motor failure. It creates excessive heat in the motor winding and then will cause high resistance in the motor. The high resistance will cause excessive current to be drawn through the motor circuitry and it will burn up the brushes, contacts, and smaller internal wiring. It can also create enough heat to ruin the bearings that support the motor winding shaft.
The delavans are not waterproof so you could not use a bag of ice even if that would help. You would be asking for trouble. The best way to combat the overheating problem from starting and stopping is to use the proper hose and nozzles. Then get enough experience that you can move the nozzle assembly quickly enough that you cover the roof without a ton of runoff and without constantly opening and closing the ball valve at the nozzle.

Gosh people, the best way to eliminate problems with the Delavan, is to eliminate the freaking Delavan ? I know you must start out somewhere, and often money is tight! The Delavan is unquestionably the best starter roof cleaning pump.' But the goal of every roof cleaner should eventually be an air diapraghm set up, someday. Mike Sullivan has a lot of experience with the Delavan
I am new, You are right , I am trying to start somewhere. I’m hoping that my hole rig will be under a 1000.00...i know that Air Diapraghm are around 1000.00 +…( i want one real bad ). I’m wanting to learn…im glad this is the right place….?
Thanks Guys

I am NEW !! You are right , I am trying to start somewhere. I’m hoping that my hole rig will be under a 1000.00 much less just a Air Diapraghm for 1000.00 +………chill out. I’m just trying to learn…..this is the place right….?
Yes, a Delavan is a good starter pump, and if it is all your budget currently allows, great! I startted with a lesser pump then a delavan, called a shurflo. But for those who can afford it, I just want them to know there are better pumps. And yes, I made this forum to teach
Yes southern IL…… Lots of roofs here…..I am looking forward getting involved in all the fun and work you guys are doing…..just trying to get it all together. I know if I am not ready by roof season it will be tuff to catch up.
i not only want to learn but i would like to contribute too
Cheap pumps, you guy's have more choice then a fly in a trash can, you have pumps laid on at cheap prices. go to ebay type in "diaphragm pump" you will find a brand new one for $100 or so (sorry Lori) I can only dream about prices like that. nozzles you pay $5 each, I pay $27 each
we pay $1 per liter for SH (1 gallon = 3.8 liters) = for me $3.80 + 10% taxes per gallon, you buy it for 1/4 of that price about $1 per gallon
I sell automobiles here in the us………I know for a fact that if I could get a 30,000.00 dollar mustang to your door, you could turn around and sell it for $100,000.00. sweet profit…..I guess it’s just that dame shipping that wrecks all the fun…..
Because of the cost for you to do business…..I hope you can charge more……
Martin….let me know if you can help me with that mustang adventure and I will let you know if I figure out anything as for as some cheaper SH for you…….
Where in southern Illinois are you from? I was born and raised there til about 10 years ago when I realized there was nothing there for me.......live in Florida now.
I have lived here all of my life.( belleville il.) Every winter I ask myself why do I put up with this cool and wind. Then I guess when I a have had enough….spring comes and it’s nice again. My wife say’s that there are so many places in the US, that have palm trees and that we should pick up and go. I have established my self at my job and feel kind of trapped……..
Anyway I’m really looking forward to spring this year.
I think a lot of people started out with an on demand electric pump like shurflo, delavan. I know I started with a delavan 5850, then the fatboy. I now run the yamada air pump. There is a video on pressuretek.com that can show you how to setup a delavan pump, plus you can youtube it. Glad the temps are back into the low 40's for my roof cleaning, some days it was 37 to 39 and roof cleaning was dam cold. I found the cooler temps though really help the sauce of love work well.
So you think in the 40’s is ok…..? it has been in the 40’s but really wet…..it has not been dry sense it has gotten above 32……I would love to get my feet wet on my first roof or two but not if it is too wet or cold.
What do you think….too cold and wet still…?
get back to me when you can....i am learning so much

The colder it is, the longer the roof cleaning chemical takes to work. I have cleaned here in Tampa at 45 degrees, it just takes a LOT longer, and ya need to go up 10 percent in chemical strength
virtue"………not easy at all.one more thing and this thread can drift off into the sunset…….(when the sun gets here)…..I am trying to buy SH In a 55 drum. Most of the places around here have sales people and they are like well I will have to get back to you on this….and they don’t….Lori said to play one agents the other but I cannot get any of them to play at all…….my pool guy gave me a quota of 310 a gal and that might be for 53 gal….i don’t want to buy it for that but I may not have a chose.
