That is roof cement along the chimney. Used to seal flashing. Apparently there was a leak somewhere along there at one time and a jack of all trades tried to repair it. Personally after inspecting that roof just with the pictures, the condition of that roof is terrible. I'd wal away from that one. Something else to keep in mind. As bad as it sounds there are those out there who will try to get a new roof by any means possible. Make sure there are no leaaks or have been no recent leaks. Just an observation.
Exactly Dr. Boyd, a great lesson for every roof cleaner out there. People DO try to take advantage of you...I've had a a few over the years. My last one was two summers ago, this lady tried to get ALL her windows replaced. They claimed my soap smoked them. Their insurance company called me. I asked them if they knew what insurance fraud was, because I could dip glass in the soap i was using in STRAIGHT concentration and it wouldn't do what they said. I told them my chemist/soap producer was willing to testify in court, let's go. Never heard another word. BE VIGILANT BROTHERS. VERY VIGILANT. Don't mess with an honest educated professional...that's the lesson.

Roof Washing Exterior House Cleaning Grand Rapids, MI
I strongly believe in what Clyde said! "you don't have to do every roof you come across" Some roofs are better to walk away from. I've doubled my bid, because I didn't want to do a roof and sadly, got it anyway! So, I did those roofs and without fail, my misgivings about them, that I felt at first, were right! I hated each job! Now, if I don't feel good about what I see, I tell the owner I appreciate the opportunity to look at his job, but it's just not something I care to take on and explain why. Then I suggest that he mention to other bidders how they plan to deal with the obstacles I see. If you don't feel confident with a roofs safety, or how to properly clean it etc, there will be other roofs. There's no reason to think you have to bid everything, just because it's there! 12 years ago, I bid the roof at the Veranda Inn in Englewood, Fl I didn't want to do it, so I doubled my bid from $1500.00 to $3000.00 and of course, I got it! I should have just walked away! I got lucky though! I had a friend John Hoover, who had been a roofer and had no fear of this 3 story tile roof. He wanted to start a business of his own, so I called the guy at the Veranda Inn and asked if he would hire John to do it instead of me. He said yes. I sold him some good working used equipment, gave him a couple of hours advice and gave him the job. He did it in 3 days and lived through it! He went on to become the largest pressure washing business in our area and then sold the business about 5 years ago to some new guys and they still run Hoover Pressure Washing today. The new owners advertise No Pressure Roof Cleaning, but I don't believe they have what we all have to do the job. I think it's just to compete and then they tell the customer they will have to lightly pressure clean it, if they catch them! That's what John told me years ago. I guess the hidden idea is, if it cleans with the pressure washers chemical injector [and it won't] then they do "no pressure cleaning", if not, then it's called a light pressure cleaning. Any of us who has pressure cleaned roofs, before learning to clean them properly, with true NO PRESSURE Chemical Cleaning, knows it takes normal pressure cleaning to get them to come clean and there goes the granules on shingles and the small cement pieces on tile off into space! OOPS! I got rambing and really went off topic! Sorry about that! Must be the Lambrusco talking!

Thanks, i have decided that i am staying away from this roof. I got into the RC business because my roof had GM on it and i thought it looked horrible especially because we were trying to sell our house. Then I started to see it all around. So i got really excited, got my equipment, cleaned my roof (it looks great) got some ins, registered with the state, made some fliers. As ipassed out the fliers i started to realize that it was not that common. Many of the houses that had it actually need anew roof. I realized that the climate is a lot differrent here and it takes longer for a roof to get bad in OK.
But! there are many tile roofs here. They always seem to get dirty. My realtor thinks there is a market for it still. I just drove through a college town today and there were many shingle roofs covered with GM, including the university. I just am going to have to do some convincing. I'm going to have to do some ggod marketing. there might not be enough roof work here for 5 companies, but there might be enough for 1 ( maybe 2 - it is always good to share)

I regret to inform you that there is absolutely no more available space left here for anyone thinking about moving to Florida. We are jammed packed. If someone moves out and there becomes any availability I will inform y'all....Hahahaha!
And now,, we return you to our regularly scheduled programing....
Hook up with a good reliable roofing company and recommend them to these folks. Most all will pay a referral fee and You can still make a few bucks. I'm sure you would find out real quick that the Roofing Company may also be able to throw work back your way too.
OK, come to find out that this property owner did have an algae problem at one time but did not know any roof cleaners and tried to cover his shingles with roofing tar. So i won't be cleaning his roof but he does need some electrical work on some other property. Gotta eat!
