how do you handle this situation

That has been discussed at length here. Basically here goes.

1. mixing time is the same either way
2. travel time is the same
3. roll out your hoses the same
4. roll up your hoses the same
5. total mix used a little less. Most of the time less than 1/2 the chems are saved.
6. Spray time save 15 to 30 minutes.

with all that said all you save is 15 to 30 minutes and say 10 gallons out of a 40 gallon mix.

Charge 75-80% of what the whole house would cost. Chems and spray time is all you save as all the other costs are constant. Insurance does not go down only spraying half a roof

One member said that he would clean half the roof under the conditions they would wash the house so the good fellow still made his money, so what do you think about that Idea? Is that a win win situations?

I agree with Pat. I still charge 75-80% of what it would cost to do the whole roof.

We will do "1/2 the roof" BUT, we always TREAT the "clean 1/2"
Why ?
Because that is an Apple Roof Cleaning Truck the neighbors see doing the roof.
They seldom know the cheap funk only piad for 1/2 the roof!
When the "clean side" gets dirty in 6 months or so, it makes US look bad.

Something to think about, huh ??

I have had a few customers want only half the Roof Cleaned and I always explain to them why I won't do it. It is just way to easy for mold spores to travel to the other side of the Roof if left untreated and like Chris said, It makes us look bad when it starts getting dirty real fast after we have treated it.

The next time someone wants only half the Roof Cleaned and gives excuses such as, " Well no one ever really See's the back of the Roof" etc... Ask them this. When you wash your car do you only wash the half that YOU see because you only get in on the drivers side? Do you only wash the front part of your clothes because you cant see the back? LOL...I've actually used these lines and made them realize that it is foolish to only do half the job and I've gotten the whole Roof to Clean.

I like the line about only washing the front of your clothes, LOL

When a customer contacts me in regards to cleaning only have the roof I wait until I'm face to face, before I explain what is happening up there. The other method I use. "do you only wash 1/2 your car or do wash it all? Do you only wash 1/2 your back, or mow half of your yard. They soon get the idea exspecially when I expain to them the savings will only be about 20 to 25% in which will be spent 3 fold in 6 months when we are called to do the other half.

As Chris said, that is your name on the equipment that drive bys are seeing.

I've had so many questions answered by going through search. You guys have aired out almost everything that's come to mind so far.

I've been thinking about the 'cleaning half the roof' issue. I think most homeowners would initially be concerned with the street side appearance of their roofs, if they care at all. I'm thinking my sales pitch will focus primarily on how the roof looks (or should look).

Picking up contamination from a neighbor's dirty roof or from the untreated side of one's own roof would seem to be of similar concern. Therefore, why not economize a bit?

I believe we have to maintain a standard that others will not maintain even if it means missing out on a job. Several months down the road when the homeowner needs his roof cleaned again because he hired a contractor that sacrificed his standards just to get the job, I believe we will get the call then.

This is based on the assumption that the other side will grow stuff, which is not always the case Zeke. In fact in Maryland most homes will have dirty north sides and clean south sides for 5 years. So that assumption would have cost me a lot. Apples advice is the way to go, sell the job and just spray it anyway. Then you have maintained the standard and made a sale. (If you missed it read above)

There is never a good excuse to lose profitable sales.

Do not assume anything.

Also I noticed you are assuming they will look for a new company all over again instead of just calling the other guy back and getting him to do it for free based on his guarantee or just hiring him or who knows??? See how dangerous these assumptions can be??

I hope this advice helps. It was hard for me to learn and I probably would have gotten mad if someone said this to me when I got started, but if you can see it and adopt it you will make more $$ and that's what business is for :)

So I understand, the alga sits on the south side but is not active?

As I'm doing research and gathering addresses of stained roof I see so plainly the normal looking roofs facing the stained and streaked roofs on any given street.
