Door Hanger Critique

Attached is a new door hanger design.  This hanger uses a Stick-It design so you can use the full area instead of having to design around a hole.  A'Deas Printing is the company I plan to use for printing.

Any comments to improve the design or message will be appreciated.

Thanks.

Charles

I think it looks good.  The only suggestion I would make is under the Free Domonstration heading where you list all the algae mold etc.  that makes a bit of a cluster (confuses my eyes).  Maybe, just say "We also clean."

Just my suggestion.

Do you do a lot of demos?  Does that help you get jobs?  Is there another benefit to demos?

Jeromy

Thanks for the suggestion.

As far as demos go, it gives the homeowner a reason to call. Demostration is probably not as important as the word FREE. Free is the most powerful word in marketing.

We have a lot of roofs here in Florida that are completly covered in algea. The front portion of the house on my hanger is black and that was the southeast exposure. The north side was really nasty. A demo gives me an opportunity to expose the original color of the roof. If they don't give me the job after the demo, the clean spot ( I always do a spot right on the front of the house) sticks out like a sore thumb reminding the homeowner he needs to clean his roof. I try to do a demo at every sales call, but unfortuneally most homeowners are just shopping price and already know they need to clean the roof and pass on the offer of a demo.

Charles, door hanger looks great!  You said it is a Stick-it design.  Do you just stick it to the door then?

It has a peal off on the back exposing the stick-it surface. You can go to http://adeasprinting.com/default.aspx and request free samples.

I would personally go with actual hangers, just because of how some can be about their property if you go sticking something to their door instead of it just hanging there. Plus less work for you having to peel off the backs, you can hang more in an hour than you could stick.

This will be the first time I have used the Stick-it hangers. A'Deas says it does not leave any adhesive residue behind.

Shawn,

I haven't used the Stick-it hangers yet but I'm not sure I agree with you about being able to hang more with the hole vs the Stick-it. The printing company I was using before delivered my hangers with the hole in place. I had to take the time to punch out the holes before I could hang them. Also I have to think that as you walk to the door you can peel off the backing and once you get there just press it to the door at eye level. I can't see how that will take more time. I've encountered different door handles which required more time getting the hanger on properly with the holes. I have also had a number of hangers get blown off by the wind. According to A'Deas that will not happen with the Stick-it hangers. As far as some homeowners having a problem with it sticking to the door instead of hanging on the handle, those people would probably have a problem with either type.

I've done some additional research on the Stick-It door hanger. I ran across a warning that Stick-It should only be applied to metal, glass or plastic surfaces. A'Deas is not responsible for damage which may result on other surfaces. They really should provide that warning in the intro video about the product. Imagine if I hadn't found that statement and put them on doors here that are mostly painted surfaces. Instead of calls for information I would be getting an ear full of "your door hanger ripped the paint off my door... when will you be out to repaint?"

Some one taped an ad to my mailbox. It pulled the paint off when removed. The door hanger looks good to me. Impressed with taking the credit cards. What's a monthly charge for that?

Not sure how you're accepting credit cards.  I just accept them through PayPal on my site.

I pay 2.02% + 15 cents for each transaction. So if someone pays with a credit card on a $400 job I end up paying $8.23. There is a $15/month minumum and a $15 monthly fee for processing and reporting.

Do not sign a long term contract. Mine is month to month so I can cancel at any time. You can also designate the business as seasonal and eliminate the fees during the winter months. Also means you can't accept a credit card during those months. Companies also have application fees for signing up. Tell them you want the fees waived and they should waive them.

Let me know if you want the company and salesman's name.

I take credit cards the old fashioned way. I get an impression of the card. Once I get back to my office I enter the information via the internet.

How does PayPal work?

Hopefully you are not performing the work before you get back to your office,  If a person's card is declined, you are up the creek with no paddle!!wink

I do enter the credit card information after the job is complete. I haven't had a card declined yet but there are legal remedies just as if your recieved a bad check. Sooner or later I'm sure I will have one declined. I may get a laptop with internet to take on the job site and enter the card information before I start the job. I'm looking at the cost and what other uses I could have for a pc in the field. My wife isn't always in the office but I could call and have her get the approval when she is at the office. Thanks for making me think about the possibility.

I'm thinking of putting some small print under the credit card symbols that says the customer will be charged a surcharge of 3% for using a credit card and that other fees will apply if the card is declined.

I definately recommend having it in writing.  When/if you go to small claims they cannot imply there was no notice.  They signed the work order and were aware of the possibility of additional charges.  May also be able to ask for fees for time spent in collection but that is usually pushing it and must get judge on good day.  They usually just assume it is part of doing business, unless you have that specifically in your work order/contract as well.

I don't take credit card information before hand.  No different than accepting a check that could bounce.  PayPal takes about 3%.  It was easy to set up on our site.
