Roof Cleaning Products/do NOT CONTAIN chlorine bleach
Permalink

I have a local guy running around like he is on fire, pushing a roof cleaning product. So I got one of his door hangers and thought why not go to the website,I thought you might like to see what they have to say about how we go about cleaning roofs and what we use to do the job! Now I copy this right from the site,

Roof Cleaning Products

Roof Cleaner QSE and Roof Cleaner OX do NOT CONTAIN chlorine bleach.
* Roof Cleaning using chemicals like chlorine bleach and TSP (Trisodium Phosphate) as a cheap roof cleaning wash is not advisable.
Chlorine Bleach is not a roof cleaning chemical! Chlorine Bleach should be avoided as a solution to roof algae removal because roof algae and mold stains return in as few as 9 months looking worse.
Roof Algae Cleaner QSE uses high alkaline / high ph cleaner for effective roof stain lichen and algae removal.

10 times more gentle than bleach!
To compare bleach and Roof Cleaner QSE, you would have to clean a roof shingle 30 Times in a year to begin to approach the harm to your shingles caused by ONE spray application of chlorine bleach for roof cleaning.

Roof Cleaning Solutions: Roof Cleaner QSE
Professional roof mold cleaning chemical product for roof stain removal with rapid results
Roof Cleaning Solutions: Roof Cleaner OX
organic roof mold cleaner, non toxic Oxygen Bleach, with NO Sodium Hydroxide, phosphates or Chlorine

Sodium Percarbonate product. He won't last long using that. The boosted version has sodium hydroxide added for extra punch,...but not good for the asphalt based shingles,....as hydroxide is a degreaser.

I bought the Roof Ceaning QSE just before I found RCIA. It's still in the box. I will get it out and give it a try. I will let you know how it works. It cost me $140.00. It is not cost effective.

Shingles are made from asphalt which is petroleum based. Sodium Hydroxide is a degreaser. Sodium hydroxide will eat/dissolve the shingle.

In my former days I used QSE. This is what you have to do. Mix the package up pump spray it on the roof wait 25 minutes keeping it wet then use low pressure with a pressure washer to rinse it off. It worked but you worked your _ off & it was all wrong. I knew I had to be doing something wrong to that roof. It was then I stumbbled on to my friends at RCIA. So now I have a weird fondness for QSE.

Thanks guys for all of your info. I'm a newbie trying to figure this out and you guys make it much easier. With regard to degreaser comments above, isn't TSP a degreaser too, and part of the "Applesauce" mix? Why isn't TSP guilty of the same degreaser problem with asphalt shingles?

Tsp is not a degreaser, though it will cut some grease. It is a detergent.

TSP: = Trisodium Phosphate

Tri ( Three )

Sodium ( Salt )

Phosphate (A Detergent/ Surfactant)

Three Salts and Phosphates

Does great in the laundry as well as on the roof :)

TSP also has a ph of about 11 depending on concentration.
We use it at about 2-4 ounces/gallon

Strong degreasers containing sodium hydroxide or sodium metasilicate are more corrosive with a ph of 12, 13, or 14 (highest)

http://www.gaf.com/Content/Documents/22710.pdf

http://www.asphaltroofing.org/pdf/tb_217.pdf

If the ARMA and GAF shingle manufacturers have been recommending bleach and TSP for years and the other products are not recommended, then we must be doing something right.

OK, well maybe I won't try it. I'll just send it back for a refund. I hate those misleading add's! it realy irritates me. I love the fact that our mix does what we claim. I think misleading claims destroys noand I want my customers to trust me.smile

Here is a passage from their site

Best results, 30 minutes, On the roof.
This technique is the best way to clean your roof. You will need to be on the roof, and take proper safety precautions. Being on the roof allows better control over where the product is applied, and allows stubborn stains to be removed with an aggressive rinse. There are many roofs that may be too steep, for these you'll need use the 'Better' or 'Good' approach

How can that be low pressure. Agressive rinse?

This was taken from http://www.cleanertoday.com/Roof-Cleaner-Results-s/60.htm as they tell you how to use their product.

This is a perfect example of why I joined this site...

QSE was one of the first products I heard about when researching roof cleaning methods. I'd seen a few fliers and adverts, but when I started checking into pricing and the shoddy cleaning methods, I knew there had to be a better way to get results.

Thanks again for all the invaluable information...I can't wait to start experimenting around with the Apple Cider-Sauce and seeing the difference!

Stick with it young lady, and daddy and you will be a success!
I too am from the midwest, Michigan.
Many of my friends lost their jobs up there, and went into other ventures.

I've tried QSE also.  It's in the garage collecting dust...along with the Shingle Shield.  All I need is the Love!

Ah, Shingle Shield....I've had some interesting experiences with that too. We cleaned our old house with it before even thinking of starting a business. It worked well enough...but I agree...love is all you needbiggrin

That's part of the reason we're starting this as well, Ohio's gone through a smaller scale of what Michigan has, my dad had to retire after 30 years in the steel mill, and he still has to work a full time job to pay the bills. I've been traveling for the last 5 years, so when I came home this time, my father and I decided now was the time to start a business of our own...and what better than something we already are interested in!
