Hi Caleb, I'm using 5/8" on my discharge, 5/8" on the inlet and a 3/4" pvc pipe going into the tank with a #50 mess suction screen at the end, works great

I use a 1" pvc pipe that sucks from the top of my tank. I then use a 3/4 hose from the tank to the pump. My outlet hose it 5/8.

My 5850 pulls from the top of the tank and I use 3/4" tubing. I terminate the 3/4" tubing with a garden hose fitting. This allows me to quickly disconnect and connect a fresh water hose for rinising out my pump. I currently use 1/2" hose on the outlet side of my pump but plan to go to 5/8" in the near future.

Better a little "too big" on the inlet side vs too small.
I have sucked feed hoses shut with some pumps I have used in the past.

As big as you can go on the inlet, especially if you have any length of hose at all coming from the tank.  Every connection is technically a restriction.  If you starve your pump, you don't get the performance you should and destroy it over timeno.  Severe starvation of a pump is called cavitation I believeashamed.

i use an 1 inch automotive heater hose. it is thick and gives my fat-boy plenty of food to suck on. it's a little pricey but it is heave duty and wont collapse under pressure.

Chris,
I used to use a pump with 3/8 fittings and I found all of the fittings at the local hardware store. Lowes also had all of the fittings. Should not be a problem to find.

Chris,
That is what I was talking about. I used 5/8" garden hose fittings to connect to my pump. They have all the adapters to go from your 3/8" pipe thread to garden hose end threads. The garden hose end is 3/4" garden hose thread.
