rcia advice over my local pump shop
Permalink

hey guys...

ive got a fatboy pump running at 25L/m...

after reading and using the search tool i am certain the advice on this site points me to 3/4" hose or even 5/8"...

the guy who sold me the fatboy was trying to sell me hose smaller than 1/2" but eventually came around and said 12mm would be right or 1/2"...

do these guys know what theyre talking about???

im thinking about sticking with the rcia advice because these guys here have the experience, not some dude sitting in the back of a pump shop...

im going to go with 3/4" inch hose ...

any thoughts guys???

5/8" or 3/4' is the way to go. If you want all the reasons why, just use the search function. There has been a ton of information written on why you want to use larger hose.

We have to be carefull with the infamous people who work behind the parts store. A company who happens to buy the same pump but for a different funtion might use the smaller hose but that might be what the guys sees being sold. Good Job siding with our experts who have the On the job training in roof cleaning!

I will tell you a funny story.
One roof cleaner had an old shurflo pump, using 3/8 hose.
I had the exact pump, but with 5/8 hose.
He started on a roof across the street, and I done, and  eating my sandwich, before he finished.

He took notice of me, and asked why I used such big hose ?
He reasoned that since the pump outlets were 3/8, he should use 3/8 hose ?

Now, on another Forum, I was tring to help a guy, but got attacked by some idiot who told me if Delavan wanted 3/4  hose, there would be 3/4 outlets on the pump.

The engineers at Shurflo and Delevan never dreamed their little pumps would be hooked up to LONG hoses.

Many of these 12 volt pumps are made for the RV industry, or light industrial and agriculture.
In an RV, they MIGHT see 20 feet of hose.

Your Delavan with spray faster, shoot fatrher, and last longer with 3/4 or 5/8 hose.

Yes, it will "work" with 1/2 inch hose, just not as good.

Another reason I HATE small diameter hose is it can easily get under shingles, and rip the funk out of a roof.

Bigger 5/8 or 3/4 dont have this problem.

We use 300 feet of 5/8, but we do some HUGE stuff.
200 feet of 5/8 or 3/4 should be fine 90 percent of the time,

Yeah, when we used trailers, we simply moved!

Hey guys-
Got time for another example of "not-in-the-know store employee story"?  I went to a Radio Shack store to purchase a panel mounted ammeter (shows amperage in an electrical circuit). I asked the guy for an ammeter, he didn't know what I was talking about. Once I explained it, he said "Oh, you want an AMP  METER!"  I didn't see the point in setting him straight.  (chech the dictionary!).  My point being, stick to the info found here. RCIA members are where the answers are.  I've been reading and researching here for over a year and I had no idea there was so much one can learn about this business. (Yes, I will be jumping in soon!).
Thanks,
Wayne

Caleb, I too bought the Fatboy and everyone on this board suggest using the 5/8 or 3/4 hose. All the pump guys told me 1/2 is fine for the fatboy. I did buy 5/8 through Lori. My question to all the pro's on this site is this. Correct me if i'm mistaken but isn't the inlet and outlet on the fatboy 1/2 inch? If it is how is the bigger hose helping you when it gets restricted coming right out of the pump? Thank's Toledo Roof Cleaning LLC

The mathmetical expression is a series equation.
The small length of the 1/2 inch ports, or the inside 1/2 inch hose reel inner core

are a= to but a fraction of the TOTAL hose length.

Here is an easy way to "prove this".

Go to an outside water spicket, and hook up 50 feet of 3/8 water hose.
Then, hook up 50 feet 5/8 water hose, and WATCH the difference ?

The house water pipe is small diameter, but big hose always mmakes a difference, because of the series equation.

Or, here is another way to think about it ?

All the RCIA guys would not be using big hose, if it was useless ?

BIG Hose, and the big hose reels aint cheap!
