I received a call last week from a guy asking me to advertise in a free local golf club publication. I usually don't have much interest in these types of things, but they only allow two companies from the same industry to advertise in each publication. I would be the only roof cleaner. The other would be a regular roofing company.

I was looking at the sample publication on their web site and saw that 3Thirty6 Publications is a company based out of Florida. I was wondering if anyone else has had any dealings with this company and what your experience was.

Here is the link to their sample publication:

Here is the e-mail that the guy sent me:

I'm curious to hear anyone's thoughts.

I got a call last week from the same company i think the guys name was daniel. It sounds a little leary only reason being is it targets the golf couses. I didnt get to much info becuase it was way outta my area. It is funny how we both got the same phone call and we are miles away from each other.

I've advertised in those publications before. Not one response from the ads. Personally, I won't advertise in them again. But, I suppose it is a way of getting your name out there. I've been considering the val-pack.

Yeah Mike, it's funny how that happened. I got two calls last week from them. One was Daniel and the other was some woman who had no idea Daniel had called me.

After hearing Gary's experience, I definitely don't want to get involved with them. I was afraid of the same thing. It sounds like they just don't have enough people to fill up the magazine and they are desperately trying to get the last few businesses.

I appreciate the responses!

ValPak has worked for me in another business that I had. The only problem I ran into was that it usually attracts people looking for a cheaper price. Just make sure you play the game so that you bid a slightly higher price and the ValPak coupon is a sizable discount. Then in the end, you are just about the same price you would bid without the coupon. The monthly expense of ValPak can usually be made up in just 2 to 3 jobs.

Mike,
You don't know me or my business practices. You can't take a simple comment made on a board and judge someone's ethics by that comment.

You have been a member for 8 days and have made 3 posts. I have over 270 posts and most of which are decent quality posts. Take some time to read some more of them before you comment on my ethics please.

I have a successful business in which I have very loyal customers and quite a few referrals. I hardly think that I am creating something on this board that is going to get out of control.

Is it maybe a bad choice of words to post on a publically viewable forum? Maybe it is? At the same time, aren't you here to learn about non pressure roof cleaning and maybe help your roof cleaning company get an edge on your competition? Do you think that most of the threads in the marketing section of this forum are that much different in concept than what I wrote? Do you realize that most of the marketing firms out there use that type of marketing with their mailers. I do because I have handled marketing for a million dollar plus business for many years. I dealt with many marketing companies and created my own marketing program for that business.

The comment I made was geared towards people that use Valpak for the first time and set themselves up for small profit margins and then are unhappy with their returns.

Often times, people think you have to discount your services way too much to get jobs and that is just not the case. I'm sure you have read some of the posts on here about the "value" of roof cleaning and some of the super low ball tactics that guys use to get jobs. It hurts all of the other roof cleaners in the area when you set the pricing structure too low. This often happens with guys who are not confident in their business practices, professionalism or sales tactics.

I'm certainly not trying to create an association of roof cleaners that are deceiving their customers. I'm simply trying to help guys that ask questions. If you feel that I am doing a disservice to fellow roof cleaners and their customers, I apologize. That is not my intention. Just make sure you reserve your judgement of people until you see the whole puzzle instead of a single piece.

Brian

I hear you Gary. I heeded your advice last year. They just called me again today as a matter fact. Amazing coincidence huh? I'm going to heed your advice again. Thanks Gary.

I did that kind of advertising here in Virginia Beach, in 2008 and did not get not one call for it. I did do a golf course but it was thru networking in my BNI group, good luck.

Last year I was approached by phone book cover advertisers. Only two businesses of the same field could be accepted. I listed two businesses. It was a total waste. For me I am now apposed to placing an ad with anybody that calls me. It never has worked

I would stay awayof any advertizment company, that ask you to sign a one year contract or more.

All they want is your money!!
