CDL & hazmat to transport SH

I have been trying to find the regulations on the web for the amount of chemical that can be hauled without a cdl and hazmat endorsement in Tennessee.  Has anyone had to get these to haul their chemicals?  I was getting a couple 55 gal barrels from Brenntag in Memphis, and they said I needed the license to haul it.  I have a couple roofs lined up to clean, and need to get the sh asap.

Ok so far I have called the USDOT and with 1 or 2 barrels you do not have to have the load placarded and you do not have to register with USDOT.

Making more calls

Thanks Pat!

Somehow you always seem to find the anwers.  How do you do it?  I just talked to Tim Long at Univar in Memphis, and am going to pick up 2 -  55 gal drums in the morning for $1.65 a gal.  I talked to Cougar chemicals in Memphis, and they wanted $5.67 a gal.  It pays to call around.

Here is what I have been able to gather so far as much as I can tell.

55 gallon drums are not considered bulk so you can haul 2 barrels without placards.

Bulk acording to the USDOT is packaging of 119 gallons or more. Or more than 1000 lbs. From what I was able to determine from them was that was single packaging.

With that the 275 gallon totes would fall within that and would need to have placards.

As far as Tennessee I keep getting the run around. Every time I get transfered there is a recording that that person no longer works there.

You need to call your local state police, that is how I got answers here in MD. After 5 hrs. on the phone with various agencys I told the state police I guess I should just not bother being compliant. I got a phone call 10 minutes later with the answers. 2 barrels = 1100 lbs here and that is not legal in this state. It is considered bulk regardless of the amount of containers. I have to have the chemical label on the tank to be legall and carry less than 1,000lbs. I also have to carry emergency spill information and a few other things. SH is still a hazardous material and has a classification on the label. This means that while you can carry it without a cdl and or hazmat Placard you still need to have the label and some other info on hand. Also there was some concern of the mixture itself. It is not the same chemical after it is mixed and may exceed your wieght if carrying mix and SH. All tanks must be secure as well.

Also if your vehicle classifies over 10k lbs gvw INCLUDING TOW PACKAGE!! than you need to register with the federal dot for a free dot #, every 2yr physical, fire extinguisher on board and 3 road triangles minimum, also must inspect vehicle yearly. This is a federal standard not state.

Here in Arkansas they told me No more than 1000 lbs period. Which means I can only carry one barrel at a time. Which also means an hour and fifteen minute round trip drive to pick it up Unless im working in that area then I can just swing by load a barrel and go to work... possibly even pick up another on the way home.

WHEN i get busy enough I will have them deliver to me.

And I like Bills answer. Who better to ask than the guy wholl be writing the ticket!

i know here in Missouri you can carry up to 500lbs of hazmat before you need a place card but that is what i can carry on a bus i have my CDL but not sure what it is for personal use and in MO if you are driving for financial gain you at least need to have a Class E driver license this even carries  over to pizza delivery people so check your state to make sure

I made it home with two barrels of sh. I got to Univar in Memphis, and they almost didn't let me have it because I don't have the signs for my truck that say Cardinal Roof Cleaning. They have a new company policy to load only in company trucks. After I explained that it was a company truck and the signs were ordered, they let me have it "this time". I had to wait for them to get it from Vertex in West Memphis, so it should be fresh. Hope to try it out maybe tomorrow.

They are probably afraid of selling to big home crystal meth labs, lol. Good for them.

Just a note, my post above is actually the federal standards not the state. The states pretty much adopt the fed standard on this, if they add to it you can only carry less.

wow looks like a good example of why the RCIA created the 50 Point Standard.

3. Members pledge to identify themselves and their vehicles clearly with company name, logo, contact information, and clearly display their RCIA member decals.

DOT requires you to label your chem tank as well, but I have yet to see anyone besides myself do this. You can get the stickers from your supplier and they know these laws very well, as they need to adhere to them as well.

44th avenue was closed this morning and is still closed.

A Pool Cleaning Company carrying Liquid and Powdered Chlorine and muratic Acid got into an accident this morning and slammed into a telephone pole. Hazmat was on the scene.
I hope this guy had insurance!

I'll tell you guys a CDL secret. Go to your local DMV and get the book (paper magazine) you read to get your CDL. You need to know Hazmat, Tank, or Hazmat/Tank (X) & possibly Combination Vehicle endorsments. Don't worry about air brakes or doubles, triples, etc. Throw the book on top of the tank in your favorite reading room & in no time you'll be able to pass the test & get all the endorsements you need. The book is written on a level even I could understand so y'all can do it too. Get your CDL & watch your competition cringe when you add Hazmat Trained to your list of credentials.
