Ok if your using a bleach with a 6% SH. Can you just double the amount of bleach and use less water??
Why would you be using a standard household bleach? Look for a pool supplier and order chlorine from them if you are just starting off. It probably isn't that much more expensive (depending on the container fees) but it should be at least 10%.
Standard bleach would need to be at least 1/2 the mix total to be as effective.

Theres no confusion. Portland Window Cleaning is a descriptive term. Like Beaverton Window Cleaning. It sounds like you know this Portland window cleaning guy. I see how your trying to use this. Ive always used Portland window cleaning by twc. Since day 1. Im so not woried about this. Its more of a hastle than anything.
Ok if your using a bleach with a 6% SH. Can you just double the amount of bleach and use less water??
No it is not. Bleach has a pretty distict smell that does not smell like 12.5 to 15% SHC. And it certainly won't clean like it either. Anything that you buy that says it is 6% at wallmart or the foodstore most likely won't be because it was made a long time ago. And I mean no disrespect but if you are trying to be an RCIA certified roof cleaner than you definitely don't want to be using that in your mix because it is not up the the RCIA professional standards.
12.5% Sodium Hpochlorite is not 12.5% bleach either. Your are not just putting in more chocolate in chocolate milk to make chocolatier milk.
It is more like adding more oxygen to water to make hydrogen peroxide and it is not that simple.
Also if you just add 2 bottles of 6% "bleach" together you don't get 12% all of the sudden.
Hope this helps

The standard is meant to keep people from putting tons of excess salt/ stale SH in the mix. More salt= more danger. So yeah 10% is fine. 3-6% Sh is stale SH that was bottled and has stabilizing ingredients added to it. Using it requires more effort and a much higher salt content will come down the gutters as it takes a lot more to get the job done. This salt content increases the risk of root shock at the first rain after cleaning.
PS Bleach is a term that means anything that lightens color. Sunshine and water are bleach, and unfortunettly most people do not know this.
Very similar to how algae means any plant like structure without visible roots or leaves. Gloeocapsa Magma is in the Kingdom Bacteria and the phylum cynabacteria making it very different from most things classified as algae.

i cleaned a roof recently, our first concrete tile, turned out really cleaned,(thanks chris for the help), after rinsing the roof it looked too bright( or is it just really cleaned?), does the rain and sunshine eventually makes it closer to it's original color, or does SH takes away some of its' color?
on a 60 gallon mix i used 25 gal. SH and .25 gal of apple butter the rest is water.
cheers, rick

Explain what you use to bag the gutters. How do you do this?

My favorite shingle roof mix is a hybrid of both Apple Cider and Apple Sauce.
For those of you that only clean as much roofs in a week that Apple does in a day and mix just one batch at a time here is a good mix that I like to use.
APPLE CIDER SAUCE - 40 gallons/average roof job
15 gallons of bleach - 12.5% sodium hypochlorite 25 gallons of hot water 5 lbs. TSP (Tri-sodium phosphate) 64 ounces of isopropol alcohol 1/2 bottle of Ajax or Dawn
or like Apple says dissolve TSP the night before without hot water because TSP takes a while to dissolve or you can use hot water on the morning of the job.
This mix works great for me.
TSP is the best detergent to mix with bleach and it also thickens the mix slightly to allow you to use less surfactant. TSP also strengthens the bleach better than the surfactant can. TSP also disolves better than Borax.
The alcohol makes the bleach penetrate into the shingles faster enhancing it's mold killing power. Without using alcohol you would need to double the amount of TSP to achieve the same results, which is less pump friendly because it does not dissolve as well.
Using half the amount of TSP you normally would with alcohol makes it more pump friendly because it disolves easier.
64 oz. of alcohol only costs $3.40 5 lbs. of TSP costs $7.50
You are saving money by using them in combination.
It has the best of both worlds. TRY IT!

Great Roof Cleaning Chemical post Mike ! I will have to try it myself ? Back when I started cleaning roofs in Tampa, non pressure roof cleaning was a closely guarded secret. No one was "talking" I had to learn on my own over 16 years what worked, and what didn't, as far a roof cleaning products and chemicals go. Now, I have passed on my roof cleaning knowledge and experience gained by countless days cleaning roofs in Tampa, FL. The "new roof cleaning guys" are experimenting, and adding to the roof cleaning knowledge base! I would encourage you and othersto "keep playing around" with different roof cleaning products. I will be 65 in 11 years, and have NO Intention to be roof cleaning at that age. It will be roof cleaners like you who will "carry the roof cleaning torch" someday. IF you can find the time Mike, I think a dual delavan roof cleaning pump setup thread would be real cool. As well as your experience with roof cleaning hose diameter, etc, etc. As you well know, there is a LOT of deliberate roof cleaning misinformation on some other roof clening forums. These selfish idiots ridicule large diameter hose to stifle roof cleaning compatition. They do not want people to have the non pressureroof cleaning knowledge to make them competitive.

Try telling the Owner of Shingle Care that Chlorine is the right stuff. Oh wait, that is what he uses and on his website it says "Chlorine has No Cleaning Capabilities?!?!?!?" I worked with a guy back in 1998 when I worked for Mallard Systems that worked for Shingle Care and he said that they use Chlorine too. Pretty funny huh!

Yeah it's funny, but what does that have to do with my question? I want to know if the recipe stays the same when using Ammonyx M instead of Ajax or Dawn.

The SH percentage will have to be adjusted to compensate for the potency of the SH you buy. Ammonyx M (Myristamine) can be used instead of the dish soap, and is better. It takes VERY little Myristamine, we use 1/4 gallon or less for 300 gallons total mix!
